they've introduced live 6, some new features and a sampler.

i'm on version 4, and its nice to know that if i upgrade to live 5 and unlock after 14th july, i will get live 6 for free. how nice !?

steinberg and apple can go fu*k themselves with their upgrading malarky.

yeah man awaiting 6 as we speak-i think they got it right with the customer loyalty giving existing users it for free

6 does look massive and cant wait to use it

Being a Logic user I am jealous of Ableton users having access to that beat repeat instrument.

Been thinking about getting ableton for a while now. As users could you tell me what its like to use for mixing as opposed to production.If i do dicide to use it for production how big would the learning curve be from say, logic

there is quite a steep learning curve if you're wanting to use ableton from concept to pretty much an end result. no two users will it the same way either. i am learning something new every day and have had it for over a year now.

the dvd by askvideo is worth getting for quick learning and will explain everything visually for you.

i had used both logic and cubase, and i'm now trying to rid myself of these two and stick to just one program.

I have both on my computer. Ableton doesn't have a steep learning curve once you understand the midi and audio clip working methods. One thing I noticed was how badly written the manual was/is. I had to buy the Live 5 power user book and it was a worthwhile purchase as I learnt the Ableton basics in one weekend.

I still prefer to work in Logic as that's what I'm used to. However, the one thing that I find Ableton unbeatable for is getting vocal samples (with no previous tempo information) into a 140 bpm tempo quickly and easily.

Plus I would say that the Logic sound engine is a little better than Ableton's as I think there is more audio headroom in Logic when pushing track volume.

But all this is only my opinion.

Yeah i figuered as much. The basdic principle's aren't gonna be that different, after all its still a music program. Just really want it for dj mixing. And wondered what it was like for that use.

My only complaint with Ableton 5 for Djing is routing it through my Emu 1820 [to monitor inparticular] is weird in that it works somedays and not others. Also you gotta put the time in setting them beatmarkers otherwise you'll curse your sets.

That said the program is a breath of fresh air in my opinion - why other developers hadn't thought of some of the features it uses is probably down to abletons interaction with its users and the fact Henke was so influental in making the program. Gonna confess that my favorite bit is the ease of midi and key mapping, fuckin brilliant however geeked out that sounds.

Maybe logic does sound better but you could re-wire ableton through it if that works.

I've been a cubase user for a long time and the switch to Ableton was easy enough. Just started really using the program a month ago and have figured out everything that I need to do except change the controller channel from velocity to another cc value. There's an arrow that looks to be what I want but doesn't work. Hmmm.

Yeah i may have to finally get( AbeltonLIVE)- I have never used it definatly seen it used..Been thinkin about a longtime mainly for mega-mix's and studio mixes -seems to be the shit from what i hear i can't see myself pulling to far away from logic 7 & Reason in production but im sure it will be a great tool & addition to the studio!!! And maybe oneday i'll have laptop for using live but i really enjoy mixing with CD's & Vinyl..

The issue I have is that I'm using the DJ bit of Live to be able to mix together all my 70s and 80s soul, funk and rare groove tunes which obviously don't follow strict 4/4 timings - not to play out but just to make 80 mins mix cds for when my mates come round for a "naughty night in".

I find that I have to use complex mode first then go in and manually move all the markers and really I have to warp at 2 bar intervals, sometimes 1 bar in order to get a good mix. BUT what's so fucking cool about Live is that I can say rip out the cheesy choruses of say a Barry White tune and I'm left with the wicked dark verses, bridge etc and then I can make my own version of the tune.

On the last mix CD I did one of everyone's favourite bits was how I mixed "Juicy - Sugar Free" into "Dennis Edwards - Don't Look Any Further" as I had the beat repeat instrument flicking in and out of the Juicy track as The Dennis Edwards track came in, then I put a delay on the last snare of the Juicy track and this just finished repeating as the bass of Dennis Edwards dropped in - hahahah I thought I was so cool.

yeh, beat repeat is fun big time.

about that free version 6.
i think that the cost of upgraiding from 4 to 5 will be the same as from 4 to 6 when it's released (or some months later)
i'have the 5 lite version (got it for free with my m-audio fw audiophile) and the upgrade is not that much.

if the quicktime ability in the 6 version (which is so cool, and long waited/asked for) is also possible in clip view (the live perform modus) in the way i hope it is, i'll get my ass of and start working damn hard to get the upgrade!!
