hello everyone..my knowledge of dubstep is absolutely basic.. but i came across some skull disco releases and i loved the sound.. you know, african drums, ethnic vocals etc..
can you recommend any releases with a similar sound?
thanks..

Digital Mystikz "Conference" is apparently the tune that inspired Shackleton to go in that direction.

It's not in anyway dubstep but...
Muslimgauze
http://www.muslimgauze.info/
he sounds kind of like the roots of it all, pure lo-fi electronics with ethnic influences from all over the place. Proto Skull Disco...
I want Shackleton to do a full album that would be brilliant.

I got turned onto him by a mix someone made on another forum it was full of minimal techno and the odd bit of shackleton and he had mixed some Muslimgauze in with it too. I was like what the hell is that?!? I have been digging around since and I like what I hear. Have you got any recomendations from his massive back catolouge to go and check out?

Well not strictly the same, but Pangea is at the top of the minimal pile imo, along with Ramadanman, appleblim, shakleton, Peveralist and the headhutner!

i'd say check all the early digital mystikz, loefah, & kode9 stuff. especially the grime 2 lp. which i think should still be availible @ warpmart as it got repressed not too long ago.
also check out Geiom's stuff on Berkane Sol.
p.s.s. check out Blackdown + Dusk on Keysound Recordings as well, especially their 'Margins Music' LP that just dropped. really really good stuff.

it was repressed like 2 or so months ago, most places should still have it.
in fact redeye had it on sale for like 3.50 (pounds).

i love muslim gauze but cannot see much similarity from his main body of work (it's massive) to the current stuff less tribal shackleton is making.
but the roots man and muslim gauze album is very good as are narcotic and observe with sadiq ben and maroon.
infact 'harem of dogs' on the maroon album is very stripped down and features a great ever increasing feed back.
maybe check out some stalker a tune called redlamp 5 (its all about the b side)
also get your self some mixes with newer peverelist stuff on there.

www.vitalvinyl.com
www.breakbeatscience.com
but honestly, they don't get everything in and it's sometimes a week or two behind.
www.redeyerecords.co.uk is probably the most reliable. shipping to stateside is pretty cheap too. most 12" singles come to about $11-$12 each w/ shipping (which is about the same you'd pay stateside for the 12" alone w/o shipping unfortunately).
