I was just wondering as someone who has been producing for not very long, how have you learnt how to make synths, beats ect.? Have you just worked it out yourself, or help from mates, forum, collage?
Just wondered considering the amount of talent alot of producers on here have got, how do you know what you know?

Well first of all I learned how to play real instruments, drums, bass and guitar. Then I went to school for audio production. I had to leave my band at home when I went to school so I started programming drum machines and recording everything myself to a 4-track. I had a couple hardware samplers after that. Got Reason in 2001. It's been a long process, I am a slow learner

Learning everything alone at home. I have no musical experience at all apart from playing records.
I wish I had some local friends to make music with. Its the small little things here and there that really help.

Going to bed at least 3 hours later than I should've done, just about every single night for the past 3 years.

Reading Computer Music magazine helped me understand the basic consepts of computer music production... After that, I also started buying books on the subject, ranging from Dummies guides to instruments university level tomes on acoustics (which are written in code and i don't really understand yet).
A few times, I gained moments of clarity after watching other producers make tunes or after dissecting their work.
Of course, reading the manuals of the programs I use has often shed light on new possibilities.
But simply the most important method for me has been the endless nights of twiddling synth controls learning through trial and error !
Happy learning mes amis

I have learnt the basics by myself through years of trial and error and practice.
Forums like these help though as new stuff can be explained and picked up easily. Im a constant lurker on a list of forums.
But now im at college now so hopefully i will learn how to take the skills i have to newer levels and learn those new skills and techniques.
