Im about to get some new decks because the old shit ones have had it and i wanna dedicate more time purely to Dubstep Now, Which is all good but my mate who is a house dj here and there is telling me if im willing to drop a grand or two i should get CD decks just for the versatility and apparently their 'the future' you think hes got a point? or is he just pushing his Techy Bullux onto me,

I like the idea of the quality and some the new ones can do everything and more compared to vinyl but still i dunno . . .

i´d stick on a digi-vinyl setup like serato. you´ll get the best of both worlds. 8)

serato is good for people who dont have the money for CDJ's.

if you have the money................

CDJ's are shit unnless u really love carrying around 2 tons of bulky equipment that cost 1000's of pounds. :?

Oh, and shit loads of CD's. which are shit quality compared to uncompressed wave's which weigh nothing.

Let us consider the pro's and cons:

Laptop + serato + 2 vinyl = 2400g + 825g + nothing = 3325g
2x Pioneer cdj 1000 mk3 = 8400g

Laptop + etc = £800
2x Pioneers = £1600

Laptop etc = Bare tunes and bare porn.
CDJ = fuck all control buttons, no porn, back pain.

Can anyone seriously argue the case for CDJ's?

well that's certainly the first time i've seen someone rate a CDJ's functionality based on how much it weighs!

hehe, its more that thats how I rate serato. :D

The only reason digital trumps vinyl is cos it weighs less. If you are willing to lug heavy vinyl around then vinyl beats everything.

Yeah because we can all go out and spend a 100 quid+ for enough vinyl to get us through a couple of weeks before another 10 sick releases come out. Surely how much you can carry is not as big of a problem seeing as these inventions called cars are about these days.

Personally only used Serato twice, thought it was pretty damn good. Ain't tried a nice pair of CDJ's before only cheap-beginner ones so I can't really say much about that..

But like fstz said - for people who wanna play vinyl and digital at the same time.. Personally think a mixture of the two is key.

Lomax is right talking about weight, imo in the long run the best format for djing is the one that will makes your life easier.
Contrary to uk, here in greece all clubs/bars/pubs have cdjs, usually u'd need to carry your own turntable if u wanna spin vinyl, with few exceptions of clubs that run electronic nights that may have both, so for me the best is cds, i just carry a case of 25, weights nothing and i can keep it all night with me... i guess if i had to carry cdjs around i would probably prefer to carry my laptop as Lomax said...
About back pain from mixing cds, yeah thats also very true, but i think it has more to do with what table u use for mixing and your general posture, and usually most of the pain will be from the long sessions home and not the 1-2 hour slots in the party..

if you can, buy the 12's, but definitely get used to cdj's and serato. if yr playing a place where the decks aren't up to snuff, you wont' be able to use serato and you might not be able to play normal vinyl as well... which leaves CDJs.

Bare dumbness in this thread. Who the fuck cares how much a pair of CDJ's weigh? Unless your a wedding DJ and need to carry that shit around with you.........

I do laptop (traktor) and CD's. I personally think Serato and other vinyl/mp3 combinations are a complete waste of time. If your gonna use a laptop why not ditch the vinyl full stop? Unless your into your scratching you can just mix on the laptop.

For me the way forward in the clubs is CD's. I can't deal with laptops because they are always causing problems and I've done powerbooks, macbooks and normal PC laptops. They just aren't as bulletproof as CD decks. Please don't tell me how you've mixed 40 million hours without a single problem because what I've just said is a pure fact.

aye, it's not about taking your laptop to a club and having it nicked / dropped / covered in beer tbh

imo djing is an art form that has heritage, which the floppy haired techno kids seem to forget these days. Over complicated "cdgays" seem to undo the work of many a legendary dj like grand master flash. I agree that as technology moves forward so should djing but i think its important not to loose where it came from. long live the 1210. Buy serato, its cheaper, more organised and a fuck load cooler!

I hate to use CD's or CDJ's. I don't feel comfortable mixing with them and the high's always sound very harsh to my ears.

I care how much they weight cos playing at mates house's who only have decks or at squats or whatever, on holiday and shit. I can't drive either.

A laptop can burn cd's too. so if they aint got decks then jobs a good'un.

Oh and I've played 40 million hours without a single problem.

and please don't over look the price and porn arguments, they are key.
