The absolute kings of math in my mind were/are Don Caballero:
http://www.myspace.com/doncaballeropgh (new line-up is decent but not a patch on the earlier stuff, Don Caballero II, Singles Breaking Up and especially What Burns Never Returns and American Don).
Lynx were a good math rock band too, self titled is a decent listen:

Ian Williams from Don Cab and Dave Kopotka(something like that) from Lynx are now in the mighty Battles who most folk will have heard/heard of:

So much stuff that kind of fits under the umbrella "post-hardcore" that I could mention, because it's pretty wide but off the top of my head:
Nation of Ulysses:

Drive Like Jehu:

Unwound:

On the might of princes:

Texas is the reason (what was called emo back in the day):

Bit obvious but Fugazi:

Don Caballero are great.
Also really like Steve Albini's band Shellac too. 1000 Hurts is a wicked album.

did any of you get into
Storm and Stress - Ian Williams from Don Cab's project? Beautiful music, and a lifetime music listening highlight for myself. Yes. THAT GOOD.

OH.. and perhaps two of the greatest releases Dischord Recs ever put out. EVER, imo discerning opinion. Prove me wrong. Chris Thompson was/is the man. See.. Unrest, Ignition, Skull Kontrol, Monorchid, Las Mordidas... need i say more? Bigs up to anyone who got to see Circus Lupus live in their prime.

oh Canaduh. Some nationalistic pride is in order, cuz i can say that brilliance like SHOTMAKER were once local at one time. ..the noise. the bass, the screams.. bliss really.
If anyone hasn't checked them out, their entire discography was put out on Troubleman Unlimited years back - double cd.
It is REQUIRED listening to anyone who reads this thread. seriously.
