i wanted to make this thread, since i think it's a shame that the jazz scene is so focused on the past that many of the world's most skilled and innovative musicians get no recognition(or financial rewards)

so basically, list any artists you like who are active and relevant

edit: didnt see the 'active' part...im not sure Gristle does jazz anymore...i dunno. Also, Gling Glo only made one album but find that & you will find tons of other polish jazz that is really amazing. All others named are currently active & represent a really broad range of jazz styles!

He is an awsome drummer that can pound it as hard as any metal band or as soft as you like, really versatile. Polar Bear is his main project as like leader, song writer, aranger. It's pretty ambient / jazzy / funky / laid back / in your face at times. The Double bass player and one of the peeps on sax are in Acostic Ladyland with him. That is a mad act, that started off doing jazz reinterpritations of Jimi Hendrix with acoustic instruments. Then they thought fuck it and plugged everything in and make a massive jazz racket now that rocks so hard and they don't even have a guitarist. Fulborn Teversham are pretty out there as well, kinda funky and a little bit electronic with mad synths and vocals. All of those are touring quite a bit, I saw Polar Bear last week and they blew me away.

Just adding on to tht all them are part of a larger group of musicians called the f:ire (fellowship for integrated rhythmic expression) collective. By and large doin very very good work across the board. Also check out ppl like Ingrid Laubrok, Basquiat Strings. Oriole, Clown Revisited etc. Also one of Polar Bears members who goes by the name of Leafcutter John does some really progressive solo work. Check him too.

Angelo Debarre

Caught him when he played here at the Bonninghton this year, stunning guitar work. Modern day Reinhardt, got to love the Gypsy Jazz.

Jose James is a brilliant jazz musician with an incredible voice who has released his debut album on Gilles Petersons Brownswood label.

An amazing talent who even done a track with Flying Lotus... def worth checking out his debut The Dreamer for a very contemporary take on jazz.

Christian McBride - Live at tonic

awesome 3 disc set with everything... literally everthing the man is a boss

plus terreon gulley on the drums... funky as fuck

Erik Truffaz - amazing trumpeter, does some good Dnb-esque jazz with his quartet, I'd highly recommend the Bending New Corners LP.

Joshua Redman - US sax player (mainly soprano). Loads of good stuff but my favourite LP of his is Freedom In The Groove.


Billy Cobham still does some good stuff, his Focused LP from a few years back was wicked.

Wait, what do you mean by "anymore"? They are one of the most important industrial groups, for me industrial is pretty much synonymous with TG
Only the most recent record was jazz, it was made after, erm, over 20 years after they split in the beginning of 80's. That said though, it's a pretty good record, but as far as I'm concerned it was a one-off session and there is much more to TG than that. Get to know early stuff that had a big influence on electronic music and if interested in performance art - Coum Transmissions was one of the last truly provoking acts, pushing boundaries to the limit and causing riots

From Polish jazz check Leszek Możdżer, Miłość, Mazzoll & Arhythmic Perfection, Pink Freud - maybe something will match your taste.

I'm familiar with Gristle's early work. But this was about jazz & I think they only did that one semi-jazz album. My band has been compared to Gristle's early works...major influence on all of us. Pushing boundaries is an understatement! Thanks for the polish jazz suggestions!
