I have that Helios album after hearing it on Vaccine's mix. Not really listened to it yet but didn't know it was modern classical, more like ambient?

Very much so! From the replies so far I can see there's a rather 'broad' definition of what modern classical is, here are a few recommendations:

For spacious orchestral and choral music I like Arvo Pärt, Henryk Górecki, Giya Kancheli - in fact most releases on the ECM New Series label. Very nice to listen to. There's older stuff on that label to (Bach etc), but it's all really good, well chosen and well recorded.

For atonal but still orchestral music, Horaţiu Rădulescu and Giacinto Scelsi are quite interesting and not too far out to enjoy, especially if atonal music is new. Both are very much inspirations for me at the moment - Rădulescu is famous for spectral music where the overtones and undertones produced by instruments are just as or more important than the melodic progression. Scelsi had a breakdown halfway through his life and got out of it by writing pieces of music based around just one note. "Quattro Pezzi Per Orchestra" is good.

For electronic/electro-acoustic music Iannis Xenakis, Curtis Roads (big inspiration for Autechre), Morton Subotnik, Jean-Claude Risset... All very good. The 2xCD "CCMIX" on the Mode label is a good sample of excellent electro-acoustic and computer music. So is the "OHM: The Early Gurus Of Electronic Music" 3xCD on Ellipsis Arts is good too.

And the Kranky label has good stuff - Stars of The Lid, Windy & Carl, Raglani. After re-reading the original post these are closer to what was stated there. Stars of The Lid are especially great.

Just posted an 'Ez3kiel' appreciation post up. Some of theyre stuff is incredible, not sure what else i would describe it as except modern classical.

Reminds me of a film score.

Fell asleep listening to the 'naphtaline' album the other day it was amazing, i cant normally fall asleep listening to anything at all but managed it quite comfortably with this.

Edgard Varese is awesome. He's not strictly speaking all that modern any more (1st half of the 20th century) but he still sounds insane and cool.
