No subs, no point?

Unfortunately where I'm from Dubstep isn't represented like it should be.
I was talking with a buddy the other day and mentioned that I'm not playing gigs anymore at spots that have 0 sub-woofers. It's one thing to not have a great sound-system but it's another thing to have no subs whatsoever. I'm curious as to what people think about this. Not being able to hear the really low frequencies makes Dubstep pointless to me.

Kind of defeats the point doesn't it? Having no low range...

I didn't like dubstep until I heard it on a system with a Sub.

First few times it was on some less than par systems, and I didn't care for it.

Me and you have had this talk plenty of times ,Greg...I agree and I don't at the same time...I've played plenty of places w/ lack of subs...still sounded great , and had a great time playing them....

If its a lounge kinda place , or an after hrs kinda vibe ,where people come to relax and chat w/ friends over some drinks...then not having subs isn't a big deal...now if its a club or a massive party ..then sure, you need to have subs and a decent system to play on.....just my 2cents!

the reason dubstep gets a bad rep from alot of kids is because they play it through their shitty computer speakers.

sub is vital

nothing worse than the "dubstep room" getting 2nd billing on a night and the PA is nothing more than a pair of Mackies on sticks.

Talk about pointless!
When I first started buying Dubstep I browsed & placed a record order from my office where I worked on a laptop, I quickly learned that was not the way to go. Not having any low frequencies is awful for the whole genre but particularly awful for some of the more minimal stuff. I remember passing up on a Cyrus tune and then hearing it later at home with my subs kicking myself in the ass for not ordering it.
That was the last time I ever browsed for Dubstep without sub-woofers.

Dubstep without sub is like sex without genitals.

The last straw for me was playing out at a spot whose "sound-system" was the 1 blown Mackie sitting behind me that doubled as my monitor and the "sound-system". Poorly placed monitors or lack there of is another rant I could go on about. I don't know how it is in other countries/cities but in my experience I'd say setups are good about 1 out of every 5 places I play.
Some of my favorites are playing on tables 3 feet off the ground, bad monitor situations, and not being able to see the f'ing mixer.

I listen to dubstep through headphones when im out and about, even without Subs I can listen to it for hours on end

Different story at a night though, I think its pretty disrespectful to ask any DJ or artist to play with a shit soundsystem
