this might sound obvious but i can't seem to get that dirty, squelchy LFO style sound that you hear so much in dubstep and d&b.

It sounds like two saw OSC, one detuned and both affect by an LFO modulatin the cut off.

I'v tryed this but it don't work, anyone got any ideas ?

Peace

you want your osc's to be detuned, maybe even add a unison style effect after that, and you want some higher freqs in there, crunch it up with a nice distortion, then just filter it with enough resonance to give the movement of the frequency that musical character that sounds like its changing the pitch.

what apps you useing cheif?

You can try layering a high passed version of the bass to give it that crispy feel. mmm... crispy..

Ahh i get ya

i like the sound of manipulatin the distortion with resonance. i think that is the answer.

Thanks yall

Try using the distortion as a send not an insert, or using a bus to split the signal, so u got the clean with the ditorted. Then eq the distortion so it just gives you that sizzle/crunch you're after. That way you dont lose bass frequencies - remember distortion will usually take away bass.

And choose your distortion well - I like PSP MixSaturator, and the Saturator in Ableton is wicked. Also Isotope Trash, and Amplitube.

Yes true on the 303. I use a Nord MicroModular and that gives out some fat 303 style sounds. i got some good sampz too.

Thanks for the advise.

yeh thats the key. wobbly basslines > send > hi pass > distortion > little chorus n reverb = filth

will have to try the 303 trickery. i got 2 analog 303 clones at home waiting to be abused in a live pa. can't wait to get my hands dirty...

At the end of the day

I like analog sound best - I know most peeps now r using all software, but for me, the fattest dirtiest most organic sounds come thru analog synths/filters, give it a little bit of valve distortion and mmmm fuckin tasty.

Dont wanna start any software vs hardware, analog vs digital wars (been done to death) thats just my opinion from my experience.

yea you know when the word 'squelch' is used the conversation is going to go analogue, thats because the only way you really can get that nice warm organic (and nasty) squelch is with proper bits and bobs not numbers.

i fell out with an old friend the other day cas he was sayin the digital software we use is shit, i told him not to be so close minded but he carried on .......till i knocked some sense into him that is.
i like the old original synths and would have one in a second but same goes for a all the digital vst's aswell. they both have equal respect in my book.
