Great monitors?

Hopefully a few of the more production-orientated can help me on this one. Looking for a new pair of monitors for production and mixing. I have a budget of about £300-£400 and definitely want a pair of active monitors, since the hum of amp fans really pisses me off. Anyway, been looking at KRKs or Mackies as I've been told they're great. Ideally, want them to last a long time and be excellent quality, but sometimes you have to compromise on price for this.
Any suggestions? Mo' thanks!

yeah like Depone said the KRK's if you can afford the matched sub too, if not then the Mackie MR8's are within your price range and have a really nice sound! Read through a lot of reviews of monitors when I was looking and everywhere seems pretty stoked on them.

i would say to save for a bit longer and look at the KRK v8's. Active monitors with kevlar cones, so they can take a beating and put out serious volume. Also they have a limiter built in that protects the speaker if you turn it up too loud, though i've never even seen the activity light on mine turn on and i monitor stuff pretty loud. They also have enough bass extension that you dont need to mess with the sub. just my 2c

Read several KRK vs. Mackie reviews and seems the KRKs are better, guess I do just need to save up for the better models. Cheers to Depone, L5D and KnobGoblin!
