Cubase, VSTs, and Edirol UA-4fx

Hi guys thanks for taking the time to read this, I have a strange problem which I've been trying to sort out on and off for 2 hours now, I've searched around google and the forum and I can't find anything that's related to my specific problem, so...

I basically thought I'd try cubase instead of my typical Logic, and I got it all up and running, using an Edirol UA-4fx as a sound card and a microkorg as a midi controller, and I loaded all my VSTs and started having a mess around with it. Like a tnuc, I broke the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' rule, and I started fiddling with the device settings further. here's some helpful print screens to aid my description:

Image

The drop down menu on the VST audio system has the ASIO option, and my soundcard. I chose my soundcard, which I think is what would allow me to hear the VSTs through my soundcard and not the pc speakers (tho i'm not a pro so im not really sure) and was presented with a different set of options than what you can see on the image. There was a buffer rate, which was set at minimum, and I bumped it up to maximum, then cubase crashed. When I went back on, all my driver settings had reset, and when I did them all and got back to the VST audio system part again, every time I tried to set it to the edirol, I got the message:

'can not found a device. please connect a device.'

complete with terrible grammar.

Now I can use the Microsoft wavetable synth fine, MIDI is not a problem, but when I load any VST, although the input level on cubase is showing something, I get no feedback, and the audio level on my sound card is dead. i'm pretty certain all my connections are fine:

this is frustrating as fuck so anyone who can help it would be much appreciated.

if you mean tick the 'online' box, that makes no difference :/ I forgot to mention, i posted that pic because the self test thing just keeps going into infinity... just emphasising the fact that somethings fucked.

okay, so I turned on cubase today and before I even had a chance to do that, I was able to reassign the VST audio system to the edirol. bingo, problem solved, EXCEPT now my soundcard isn't picking anything up :| the levels are dancing around on the sequencer, but I'm not getting any sound back, despite the settings being the same as they were when I made the thread. Is there something I'm missing? I swear, I'm just not meant to use cubase.

thanks a lot for your help so far, deadly habit.

fuck this, I unplugged everything and started again and now the soundcard works but cubase crashes every time I try to load it

I can't even say it's a shitty piece of software cause I never had the chance to use the fucker

I'm going back to logic. thanks to everyone with some sage words of advice.

is it cubase sx2 or sx3 cause i've had very few issues with those
far as srudio 4 no experience with it yet as i'm a cheap bastard

hey, i'm a cheap bastard too, it's a cracked version which explains all the crashes but my main concern is that if my soundcard works the sequencer doesn't, and vice versa.

it's cubase studio 4. I think my sound card isn't picking up MIDI now, because it's not reading it in cake walk either. I haven't tried it on logic yet because I'm a bit cba about moving all my gear upstairs :p

ALWAYS use your soundcard's dedicated driver (the UA-4X driver), not the generic ASIO Duplex that it gives you as an option. If it asks you to do the test ('the audio configuration has changed' or whatever it is when it starts up), don't bother, ignore the warning, choose your dedicated soundcard driver. Set the buffer length/latency in your soundcard's control panel to something reasonable.

If you're saying that the meters are jumping about in cubase but you don't hear anything, that is because Cubase is sending the audio to the wrong place. Press F4 and choose the output tab, then select the appropriate hardware output from the options your soundcard provides.

It's nothing to do with VST System Link - that is about using two computers in synchronisation together. Forget that entirely.

Hope this helps :)

EDIT - btw I don't think there's ever been a working crack of C4, any version of it. Steinberg are rather proud of that...

Your first mistake is trying to substitute that bloated steinberg app for Logic.

I just wanted to check out some of the other sequencers available, but I'm starting to regret ever trying this because I literally am not able to send or recieve MIDI any more :| it's not a setting on my soundcard that I've missed cause I've checked everything, and it's not the sequencer cause I've tried both computers now, as well as reason, logic, cakewalk and FL; none of them pick up anything. I'm gonna try a friends controller tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone who posted for the help and advice.
