What exactly are you using to do this?
I'm finding using the standard EQ on Cubase and the Izotope Trash and a lil compression gets it sounding pretty big.

Resampling.
Limit the sub in PSP and pump the drive up.
Split the frequencies.
Resonance automation.
Chorus, flange, distortion
There are no rules

try layering another of the same wobble distorted, highpassed and wide panned, i just did this today for fun/experiment and it sounded full and awesome.

I highly recommend a multiband distortion VST such as Ohmicide. Either that or layering several synths and using a bandpass filter on each so you can put different kinds of distortion on each. I like to leave the < 250hz range alone and use the "puncher" preset on ohmicide for everything above that and to about 1k or 1.2k (I forget exactly, I'm not at home) Above that I mess with it and sometimes route it to another track and put chorus and flanger on it.
A little bit of bitcrusher helps take the digital edge off too, Ableton's built-in redux is good for that in the "soft" mode.

the phase distortion plug in in logic produces some crazy noises over wobbles

QuadraFuzz from Cubase (3 and 4) can do miracles some times. It is a multiband distortion VST.

sounds interesting. But doesn't a bit crusher make it sound more digital?
Mmm... it's hard to describe really. Rusko uses bitcrusher a lot in his tunes, it just adds a nice bit of randomness that I totally dig. Try it and see if you like

I beef up my basses with Adobe After Effects.
Works wonders for those synesthesiaists out there!
