Was chatting to some bird today who couldnt understand how i make tunes of various styles, sit and produce most days when i'm in the house yet at no point do i play a musical instrument.

Got me thinking - of course there is skill in making electronic music, i may not be the best producer in the world but i've made some tunes that i think are half decent. What interests me is how many of you can actually play a musical instrument with skill?

I'm not that great at it because I haven't practiced much in years but I do play guitar and bass. It definitely provided the base for my knowledge of music theory and whatnot.

Devoted 15 years of my life to being a classical cellist. Played for another 10 years after I switched focus...

Other than that... basic skills on piano, guitar, and various percussion.

Isn't grade5 quite high? That shit could help making some real nice melodies and basslines, surely?

Drums for about 17 years, played a lot of live shows etc etc.

Bass, guitar and keys on and off (not very good on keys though) for the same time.

Teaching myself trumpet for the last 2 years or so and loving it!

Grade 5 on flute but gave up when i was 14 (I'm now 20). Played guitar since I was 12 though. Both have definately helped for understanding keys, chords, rhythm etc. Can mess around with basic chords on the piano.

Wish I could play the piano properly though, definately think that would be the most helpful for production.

I don't play any instrument.

All I can play on keyboard is a clip from "Lord of the Rings" movie studied from youtube -r-
