i'm seriously considering getting serato scratch, and would like some input and advice on this. also, what kind of mixer and turntables would be sufficient for it? would i be spending a good 1400 dollars or what? give me the lowdown

i will get argued with but in my eyes

serato = cheaper faster way to emulate vinyl with mp3

traktor scratch = more expensive way to emulate vinyl with more features and better timecoded vinyl

i use serato, i would recommend it but i haven't used any other time coded software like it so i cant compare it! I do occasionally get problems with it but they are usually sorted but re wiring it back up but other than that it does everything u will need it to do!

If you havent got decks yet i would recomend getting some decent-ish decks first. I am using it on some shity numarks at the mo and just as it plays as if it was vinyl its anoying cueing in a record and it taking a second to get to the correct speed! I dont think it matters to much about the mixer at the moment if you are just starting as a bedroom dj!

i agree, i am also on very shitty numarks and its tuff luck.

i would say before you think of serato, think of vinyl in general. try that out.

Yea if using serato you need good decks.... The serato vinyl doesn't quite act like vinyl, I find it a little tougher to beatmatch it sometimes. but having good decks will be your best bet, cause trying to beatmatch on shit decks always sucks.

Serato is good especially if your a bedroom producer/DJ....its nice being able to bounce a copy of your tunes down and then mix them in with other tunes you actually have on vinyl! jus for a bit of fun really....but if your planning to use it live deffo get some better dex! safe!

Serato is good and pretty solid though i've had it fall over on me a few times. I have torq at the moment as i don't really play out much its cheaper and is feature packed.
It can be prone to some silly problems but once you've got it set up its as solid as serato (don't let anyone tell you other wise there's a lot of bull shit out there) lol also i've used torq on some shitty pt 1000's and it works fine.
Traktor is pretty bad ass but as mentioned has a steeper learning curve....and £££!

If i was going for a DVS now days i'd try and find a place where i could try them out...they all have their own quirks and idiosyncrasies but at the end of the day they all do the job...

Thats the first time Ive ever heard Serato called the "cheaper way"

I would say it like this...

Serato = pure vinyl emulation with features added as requested, the main focus still being on vinyl emulation

Traktor Scratch = a DVS system with other concepts and features added from inception, more flexibilty if you want it

and Widds.. I get what your saying about the vinyl, but really there isnt any noticeable latency on my rig with Serato, so I dont know how important that really is... I am going to read up on it in a lil bit though to see the benifits to having a 2k tone vs a 1k tone or whatever the difference is sposed to be.

What exactly do you mean doesnt act quite like vinyl... for me it feels exactly like it - been using Serato for 3 years and spinning for 10. Im just curious as to what you mean, it could be an adjustment you have to make on the software - oh, and dont look at the screen if you are more acustomed to vinyl - ears not eyes to beatmatch.

I would also suggest getting decks, as thats the best way to use Serato. Kinda defeats the purpose to do it in internal mode or use CDJ's, no? Ive been using it live for 3 years without a single problem.

What exactly happened when it "fell over" on you? The only times Ive ever had a problem with it in 3 years was related to the turntables or needles and rendered both Serato and vinyl useless. Im just curious what you meant by "fell over"... In 3 years Ive never had a software issue or a computer crash, and I ususally download the betas as soon as they are available.

This. So does Jazzy Jeff, DJ Premier, Z-Trip, DJ Rectangle, DJ Yoda... the list goes on. Not just for Serato, but for DVS's in general.

I love vinyl. Love it. But DVS is the future standard until something better than the vinyl style interface comes along. In Los Angeles, I know more Serato DJs (who are djs who play out very regularly in both the dubstep scene and other scenes) than I do vinyl only DJs anymore. Even the guys who dont use Serato use a fair amount of CDs in their sets, you have to to keep up nowadays. DVS's have been proven, the time to hate is over and the time to adapt is now.

And like Widdler said, try vinyl first. If I were just starting out, I would by turntables and a mixer with some vinyl first, then try to use as many DVS systems as possible before making a decision on which one, as they all offer different features and takes on the idea.

I'd recommend Ableton, unless you're really caught-up on using vinyl.

BTW 1.8.3 is out. Anyone try it yet?

I'm going to start playing strictly .wav on serato. Anyone else doing this either? My friend does this with House and it sounds fantastic.

FLAC is where it's at, if you don't find MP3 good enough.

But tbh, unless you're in an acoustically perfect environment, you can't tell the difference between even vinyl and 320k MP3, aside from the imperfections.

I heart serato.

Some dope new features in 1.9

Also it looks like Video-SL will be pretty much free...

also there are a lot of statements in this thread that are just pretty much totally wrong. I use SSL to scratch, beat juggle, and mix. It is a close to vinyl as anything I will ever use (on a pretty crappy computer, no less.) The software is solid as hell and has always been trustworthy for live situations. Always... Rane has always made great products that I've NEVER EVER had a problem with.

Also, I like the guys that make SSL. The SSL software is a free download to any computer - no keys to mess with. You can even load up your libraries without a Serato controller.

love Serato. First used this kind of thing with Final Scratch v1.0 and hated it cos it was so unstable and unresponsive. i didnt get that with Serato... tbh i couldnt really notice a difference between using it and straight rekkids. would definitely recommend it 8)

I didnt mean to bring in to question SL stability when i said its fallen over on me... it has just frozen on me in the past but this may have been the laptop i was on (not mine and probably a mess). it is solid as a rock.... but things do fuck up..
