....Any Synth
Why do people (no offense) ask such stupid questions?
Every synth has Attack & Release, therefore has the ability to make nice pads. So I would recommend any synth that has more than 3 oscillators with adjustable attack & release.

He didn't ask what synth can make a pad though, he was asking for advice on which synth's we think are good for making a pad.

Which is exactly my point, opinions are useless; in relation to making pads all you need is multiple oscillators and adjustable attack & release. 99% of synths are the same and have both these features standard. They are all good for making pads.
This question is like 'if a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? ...There is no right answer or opinion. Synths basically all do the same thing and are all good for making pads.
I mean for gods sake, if you think this is a great question/thread pyro, why don't I start a thread asking, I dunno... which synth is the best for making white noise?

I take offense to that, i'm also a tnuc to people who's opinions differ to me & people who defend Pro Tools as a adequate DAW for creating electronic music.

I highly recommend Alchemy by Camel Audio. Its my favorite "sound design" synth right now. Its kinda like Maelstrom in reason in that you can use long samples as granular/wavetable fodder as well as a crazy amount of filtering and modulation possibilities. But you can also load in your own samples and it also has a great VA and additive synth engine as well.
This is an example of some of the more metallic stuff I've done with it:

Everything, including the drums is from Alchemy.
I've said it before, and I'm saying it again: this is a production forum. Expect people to ask production questions. If you dont have anything to add to the discussion, no one is forcing you to make a comment. The topic of pads is pretty broad. Its not a stupid question, they wanted to talk about different ways of achieving atmospheres.

If you're using FL Sytrus can be manipulated really well. A bit of time, reverb and mastering can do it lots of good.
Sytrus can also be downloaded for most other interfaces, other than reason, which doesn't accept VSTi's. =[

for pad or drone sounds i often go for granulizing audio files, stretching samples...and sampling the after effect of a big reverb. (mostly in Reaktor)...the detail in the sound can be more interesting.
just something different to do, rather than detuning oscillators and tweaking envelopes...
a friend pointed out some good Plug-ins specifically for this sort of thing, by a Michael Norris...

try out Spectral Dronemaker effect (for making drones from samples)
