ELECTRO / TECHNO / DETROIT / DUBSTEP / AMBIENT / JUNGLE

I was asked to compile 10 tracks for ‘Desert Island discs’ interview for a recent Internet radio show (which you can listen to here)
Since the interview, I have been inundated with requests to compile a list of tracks big enough to make a mix.

After many many weeks I have come up with a set of tracks I believe best describe the music/genres I have grown up listening to. I am 80% happy with the choices I have made, but have obviously missed out a great deal of superb music.

A cue sheet for this mix (so you can go straight to your favourite tracks is here)

Shrink II Fit is a self confessed old git who has been mixing since he acquired his first set of turntables in 1984. He has entered the DMC UK championships twice, reaching the semi finals on both occasions in 1987 and 1989. He also was the inaugural winner of the Vestax / DJ magazine championships in 1992.

He started gigging in 1986 as a 15 year old for sound systems in west London, and was frequently the “soul Boy” at many a Blues party for about 2 years. He was also a regular at a few London clubs throughout the early to mid 90’s including “The Crazy Club” at Astoria 2 and the bar at MoS’ Rulin nights.

His gigging really came to an end with the birth of his first child. All of a sudden, spending money on records seemed to be a waste of money when there was more important things to pay for. Also, this coincided with a frustration of dealing with promoters…..
Mixing wise, his influences are far and wide and he regards himself as the “anti-trendy”.

He was very heavily influenced by US DJ’s such as Grandmaster D (Whodini) and Jazzy J, but it was at an art exhibition by Lee Quinones at the Riverside Studios where he saw Whiz Kid and Wanda Dee which had the huge influence on him spending his paper round money on his first set of Technics.

The next set of influences on him are split in to two camps:

The London Soundsystems:
Mastermind, Databass, Rapattack, TNT and Beatfreak brought Hip Hop styles to (what was then) Soul Music…

The Europeans and DMC:
Les Adams (The Mix Doctor), Paul Dakeyene, Sanny X and Ben Liebrand, though strangely enough not the much cited “cut and paste” masters Steinski and Big Apple Productions.

Throughout the years, he has experimented with numerous different formats. From tape editing on an old Akai open reel four track (woo hoo, Symulsync!) and a Yamaha MT100mk2, to his weapon of choice nowadays which is Acid pro..

Although he still keeps his hand in now and again, he generally only puts mix-tapes together for the journey to work and for Mix-tape websites (including http://tmb.dj where he can regularly found lurking!!).

Amazingly (after 25 years!), this is his first ever commissioned mix.

I just registered over here to say a few things..

Firstly, I am absolutely chuffed that Rob trusted me to bang this together for him. You guys (just as we do at TMB) know exactly what a knowledged and genuinely nice bloke he is, so putting in a months work was more of an honour than a chore.

Secondly, I really hope that you guys here like it. I hope the mix is up to the quality of tracks that Rob selected.

Thirdly, and this goes out to the artists on the mix that use this forum (I suspect some of you frequent this place), sorry in advance for what I did to your tracks!!

interesting selection. quite a few of the more aged tracks in there would definitely feature on my desert island.

my mate runs a pub in sheffield where they've turned this concept into a night. possibly not the first place to do it, but the results are always fascinating.
