Been a lurker for a while and I always read the other board!


Been making some beats on an Atari ST chip tracker...just square waves and 4 bit samples for most of the drums.

Would like your opinion on a couple of prods here:

The first one I'm stuck on finishing..like its two tunes trying to break out!

No such as swing on this old tracker but tryingto sort of fake it with pattern lengths etc....

Very cool. I wasn't expect it to hit hard with just 4 bit samples and square waves, but I think you pull it off nicely. I'd love to hear it on a big PA. The way you can hear the individual pulses on the bass at the end of the second track is sweet.

Is there a chipstep genre or is that just your style?

Quarta 330 from Japan springs to mind. He uses two gameboys.

There's also a gameboy guy called wildman.steve from the US.

there are others who use 8-bit style vstis in FL studio like unicornkid.

kode9 has bleeps and stuff and a few grime producers tend to use those 8 bit vstis too.

But apart from the Quarta 330 and wildman steve (Who I came across by accident) I can't think of anyone else who uses real 8bit computers/soundchips exclusively.

To be honest.....the chiptune kids don't seem to dig this kind of stuff. quarta 3300 has been around for years and his stuff is amazing but it doesn't seem to catch on within chiptune circles..it does outside in general electronica though.

I did a live show and my cover songs of old 80s tunes got the cheers...but the dubsteppy stuff (first time i did it live) was met with silence from the glostick waving kids

'chipstep' just seemed an apt name
