just got an assignment in which i have to:
quote: OPTION 1 – ‘Beyond the norm’: Compose and arrange a piece (c. 4-5 minutes in length) which demonstrates an
experimental approach to at least TWO of the parameters of popular music composition (melody, harmony, rhythm, form,
timbre). It is up to you to decide what constitutes experimentation. However you should justify your approach in your write-
up through analysis of relevant ‘models’ from popular music post-1970 whose ‘experimental’ ideas are influencing your
work.
can anyone name some dubstep/garagey artists that are doing any of the above? the more abstract/experimental the better
already know of mark pritchard...

Hudson Mohawke has a pretty interesting approach to rhythm - very very unquantised beats in deed.
Kode 9 is someone who writes tunes where I always notice his deliberate play with pitch - there's a lot of detuning on multiple synths going on, micro-tones etc. Stung is a good example, as is his new one Black Sun, the bassline on 9 Samurai is a bit squirmy...

Kuma has some atonal works that have very unusual pitch structures.

and for an unusual rythym, I'd rate appleblim. Take a look at Fear, snares drop in unusual places. You particularly notice it when you mix into it from another tune. the track Vasan similar deal.

Milanese (doesn't stick to musical "rules", different approche on dubstep, industrial-like)
Kode9 (deep sub-bass, slow bpm, detuned sounds)
Burial (d'ah....ambiant, sexy, weird mix of different tempos)
Shackleton (very tribal and mystic stuff)
Scuba (really spacey, deep and sexy, psychedelic influences)
Scorn (dark, very slow, hellish dub with doomey bass)
Flying Lotus (....not strictly dubstep...but one of the best and most beautiful stuff on earth)
Beats Antique (not really "experimental", but new in the sense that they mix dub, glith-hop, with ethnic and gypsy kinda music)
Heyoka (psychedelic dubstep with very nice basslines)

Mount Kimbie
Akira Kiteshi
Rustie
Jamie Vex'd
Daedulus
Boxcutter
Spac Hand Luke (Luke Vibert)
Domu's rhythms are often interesting... check "let it be"...
For interesting non 4/4 rhythms check Nitin Sawhney and Ojos de Brujo.... how you could ever do that in dubstep I don"t know....
Also, check out Pepe Braddock - v experimental, def not dubstep though.... (would be ace if he did a few tracks though...)
If I'm not stating the obvious - Aphex, Squarepusher, Amon Tobin....

If you think about it broadly enough, ALL music is experimental dubstep.
