I've had my DX7 for a little while and am considering selling it to buy a Microkorg XL possibly.. I love the sounds of the DX but am finding myself using FM8 much more these days.. I just wanted to see if there were many DX owners out there.. I know they were quite popular and sold a tremendous amount of units..

I have the rack mount version I forget what the model is. Those things aren't really worth using though imo. It's not like a vintage analogue piece. Thosse FM synths are digital. The modern version such as the FM8 do the job just as well and even better.

I believe you can actually load patches from the DX7 right into FM8. I seem to remember there being a website w/ a zipped file of all of the DX7 patches too.

Definitely do some research and see if that's true.

FM7 = Software DX7 if im not mistaken

and the FM8 owns, so i would just stick with it

Hmm, personally i wouldn't get rid mate, you just need to get inside it and try programming the thing.

Listen to Brain Eno's Apollo and 'the Pearl' LP's he uses one for all the pads on it, the heavily delayed ones that sit behind and follow all the piano notes. 'Nuff said.

EDIT2: I'd suggest trying on cheaper kids toys and consulting an appropriate forum first though.

i had a dx7 for 10 years, absolutely brilliant synth, its all over most of my records
stopped using it when fm7 came out
so i sold it
fm7 and now fm8 is just so much better
i love the dx sound

^ likewise, ihad a tx81z for a while but FM8 is WAY more user-friendly.

I have a DX21!

There are some colossal amounts of DX7 patches on Yahoo Groups, a great way to get going again.

Having said that, though it's my favourite sounding synth (so very Megadrivey), my DX200 gets next to no use in anything practical...
