Hi,

I'm thinking of finally getting a mac book pro.

Spec -

MacBook Pro, 15", Aluminium
2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
320GB Serial ATA @ 7200

Are there any users out there? How does it perform as a solid music making machine? Can you run a decent studio setup off a MPC? It is alot of money but I want the portability and the switch over to Logic.

I'm currently running Cubase SX3 on a dual core PC with 3.5 gigs of RAM, and use loads of VST's and audio samples. I'm a little dubious that a MBP will restrict my use of VST's and samples. Is this likely? I know some VST's aren't compatible with Mac's, and i'm not worried about that side of things, just the performance.

Obviously i'll be switching my reasonably beefy PC for a little 15" piece of metal which is a daunting prospect.

Any help or advice would be great.

I've got one and it runs logic with numerous vst's perfectly, never had any issues.

I'd say do it!

first things first, logic DOES NOT USE vsts - it uses Audio Units (AUs). so god knows what 'vsts' you were using if you managed to get them to work in logic...

Anyway, that macbook pro will be more than enough. i've got one that's a few years old now and it still runs like a charm! I've got a slightly slower processor and half the ram and I'm rarely hitting the processing limits. I would highly recommend logic as well.

ok actually maybe with boot camp or parallels but that's using windows operating alongside OSX rather than inside OSX itself. i'd rather keep windows away from my hard drive...

i just bought one with exactly the same spec 2 weeks ago and cannot fault it.

im running FL via VMWare Fusion with a lot of pretty large VST's, omnisphere, battery 3 and its very very smooth

not heard of that one before. looks pretty slick though!

i havn't personally used any of the alternatives but from what i've read in quite a few places fusion seems to be the most secure way of running windows on osx

Wow, Omnisphere. Thats a beast. Definately got my eye on that one. Glad to hear your MBP can handle it.

Just can't get over the price. Alot of £££ for just a laptop. But still, need to learn Logic for Uni....

go for it dude, id had a pc since forever and had always steered clear from macs but they are definately a good look!

omnisphere for the win aswell. its immensly epic.

ive got that exact spec model and its an absolute beast. not got close to challenging its cpu resources in logic

logic 8.02 still wigs out a bit sometimes but thats down to flaws and bugs in the software, not the laptop

Yep, ive got one exactly the same and its an absolute beast, logic runs so smoothly with about as many au's as you desire.

Go for it, you'll love it I promise :p

No VST's in Logic ?

So I wouldnt be able to use Absynth for example ?
