Through a lot of scrounging and saving with a mate I have 30k at my disposal to spend on a production studio, just thought this would be the best way to get some peoples advise rather than hijacking threads.
So far the only definite buy is an SSL Quad Compressor and two 50" screens. But i'm all for other peoples opinions... so shoot

If you were smart you would not spend it on a studio but invest it in something else that was way more likely to benefit you.
Dont take it personal. I am not saying you will not make some bangers once your studio is complete but you do not need to spend that much at all.

What else is on your list?
What's the purpose/general usage intended to be?
I was going to suggest Klein and Hummel O300/O300D, or
PSI 25/3sbtw

if you don't know what you want, there's no point in buying shit that you don't need.

Yes, this, etc.
If the first things you have thought of are a compressor and 2 screens, you need to have a little rethink about what's actually important.

No, these are the two things which I know what brand I want etc and the decision is finalized.
On the list is a few thing off the top of my head inc:
Mixer
2 pairs of monitors
1 pair HD 800's
headphone amp
2 x 50" screens
Hardware EQ
Hardware Exciter
Hardware Comp (SLL Quad & another for select channels, rather than over whole mix)
Hardware Reverb
Patchbay
Swedish Leather swivel chairs[/b]
Dynamic Mic for recording vocals
Sondcards
DSP cards
etc
And i'm just looking for advise, which I will take with a pinch of salt because at the end of the day its my dosh.
So if anyone has an audio porn in mind post up some links

Invest the money in something that will have a high percentage of a good return. Spend a tiny part of what you have.
You could easily spunk your 30k and then have to sell your equipment and then be left with nothing but a dirty mattress.

tbh i don't care about return, its not a business venture but a hobby taken to extremes and there's no risk because the only cash used is money we've earned (no loans or mortgages) and the only reason I would sell equipment would be to trade it in for something better.

You're 19 and you have that kind of cash at your disposal???
As Serox has pointed out, 5,000 on a DAW would turn out the same quality tunes, and with the cash left over, you could make a downpayment on a morgage. Don't be a fool and spend it all on toys!
My pal recieved 15,000 from his dad then spent it all on shite. He only has a suit to show for it. He works in a factory now to pay off his expenses when he could be cushty with a property somewhere.....
If you're wise, you'll give the money to me anyway. I'll invest it in my business ideas and return your advance + profits.

On monitoring
If you haven't already invest some money on room treatment.
This is a very good package for smaller rooms.

As for monitors IMO don't take any advice but that from your own ears. On a mid-high price range there many excellent choices but it all boils down to what your ears like best.
For an insert compressor I have recently acquired an Avalon 737SP tube mono. I got it used from a closing studio last week and the thing is INSANE. Anything you pass through it gets a good shine or a splash of grime depending on the settings. And it doubles up as an excellent tube mic pre and a tube DI. It is quite expensive if u buy new tho and you are already spending enough on the SSL quad .
PS. I've just noticed the posts above about the wisdom in spending the cash. I am afraid I have to agree with those. If you don't intend on making some dough out of the studio make some smart audio investments and keep the rest for a rainy day. Why spend cash on eg. an aural exciter and a mastering grade compressor when you can get your tracks mastered by pros on mastering monitors for , what 50-100 quid last time I asked. If you have to spend then at least don't go beyond gear for the mixdown stage.

Instead of being given a collage account as a kid my grandparents gave me stocks as a kid, and I only found out a few months ago when they ask me if I wanted to sell. That's 11grand and the other 4grand is from money i've save from working since 16. The other 15k is my mates share of his cash which his granddad left him when he died. Yeah I do pretty fuckin lucky and relise 95% of people at my age wouldnt have the chance to do this
