				That "Flying Lotus" sound

				Hey guys
Anyone got any idea how to make that "flying lotus" sound....not really sure how to describe it, but you know when you hear it. Kind of like a cd skipping and playing the sound backwards at the same time. Couple of other people do similar (i.e.: prefuse 73 or lukid)
I have tried experiments, but can never seem to quite get it.
Cheers

(I figured he was just a fan)
But if it really is Dev/Null then I'm still cleaning the pair of pants I wore to Bangface the other month. FUCKING FILTH!!
Edit: Never mind. Still, you have great taste in nicknames!
Flying Lotus is a beautiful mystery to me... I've tried, I've failed, I've given up and then I've tried again.... just can't get it right. It always seems like his quantise is morphing or something... sometimes things hit too late, sometimes too early, so it just sounds 'loose'... as much as anything I think it's probably just clever programming.... Burial's beats always sound "perfectly out of time" too and he does them all by hand....?
TBH, I don't think there are many easy ways to match FlyLo... you've just got to be a fucking genius.
Which I'm not, but hopefully you are!

Both Flylo and Prefuse are MPC men - quite old school programming. There's a lot of compression and eqing going on...
just found this, might be of use - haven't watched it yet though as im in a library -

Yeah, makes sense. A lot of those producers (especially Fly Lo) come out of the Hip Hop scene, so it follows that they'd use traditionally Hip Hop tools to achieve it.
MPCs are still fucking awesome.

try using nice floaty synths and just jam with a drum pad or something, flying lotus has been building up his style since day 1 so emulating it is going to take some time!

Flylo uses reason and ableton live.
Also if you want that off the grid sound try playing with quantise off and just take the best bits.
Also move shit randomly off the grid if you dont have a midi controller (I find the midi way easier to get a groove though)

The vocals on Tea Leaf Dancers has an amazing pulsing effect. Sounds like a side chain with a really long slow release, with the compressor triggered at the start of each line, causing the vocal to duck, and slowly return to full volume as the line continues.

More than likely, it's just a long attack in the ASDR settings on the sampler for each sample(line).

IMHO Tea Leaf dancers is highly gated/compressed, so vocs are also...
FlyLo`s sound is about dreaming, not that about dancing. Everything have weirde freqs, etc..

Wtf are some of you on about?
His tunes sound like he is just jamming with a controller/pads with quantize turned off for some drums.
No need to get all technical about.

Bullshit! Just keep copying!
Music is all about ego and fame.

Yeah, but there's nothing wrong with learning from and being inspired by others... that's why we have "genres" and not just a 2 billion unrelated musicians.
