Do you think I could write a 3500 word essay on dubstep?

University level, counts 10% of my final grade.

One of the topics I can choose from is "A music movement and it's history" or something like that.

Would love to be able to do that! :)

this. Maybe make DS your main topic but but a good chunk in there about what led up to it.

3500 words is not that much, especially for a musical genre such as dubstep. You could write about where it's coming from (Garage, Dub, 2-step, DnB, etc etc), and where it's heading (different orientation in the scene like the reggae sounding stuff, the darker, harsher stuff, the 4/4 beats, etc etc).

It could be done for sure. Talk about the mystery of burial back in the day. That's a 1000 words right there.

in my opinion you should do something that is more traditional and a lot of people can relate to or seem to remember aspects of that movement.

I have fallen into this trap a number of times over my eductaional career and have often found myself getting low marks simply because my lecturers can't relate to it.

you will also face the daunting task of finding quantifiable literature, both in terms of its own credibility and then on top of that the credibility of your tutors.

so yeah, i'd steer clear. It seems a bit cliche but doing one on Hip Hop would probably be the most credible and most recent movement that would prove easier to find literature relating to it.

good luck

Its possible, but probably not the best thing to do.

I reckon following UK dance music from the late 80s to now, and including dubstep, would be alot more interesting and more likely to have something the person reading it can relate to.

I'm doing Audio Engineering and won't have to worry about my lecturer not "getting it", he's into all sorts of electronic music. Maybe I'll go the easier way and write about hardcore to jungle to drum & bass.

Thanks for all the comments, will give it a thought :)

of course you can!

you can probably write it about any given artist or label, alone.

ha, you aint kidding. Reckon the dissertation im doing about inter-examiner reliability during OSCE exams is the next step of boredom though  What are you studying then? (If you dont mind me asking!)

Oh, and I reckon 3500 words would feel like a lot less than it sounds though! ALOT to cover :o Would be well interesting though...

I was thinking the other day, is it a bit worrying when you go to so few of your actual lectures (thanks to their mind numbing dullness) yet happily watch mala do a 2 hour lecture at the red bull music academy? lol It was SO much more interesting....

Like many people said you can do the other electronic origins (2step, garage etc) and a bit about big artists.
But, you can also do a bit about much aspects "imported" from the whole reggae culture, and especially the dubplate culture ofcourse :D

IME they frown up on essays done by fans.

I LOVE DUBSTEP BECAUSE I LIKE BASS AND WEED AND CAPS AND HOODIES. SKREAM IS DEAD COOL HE IS LIKE GOD BUT SOME PEOPLE SAY HE IS GAY BUT THEY ARE GAY.

You get the idea.

Seriously though, I wouldn't do it, choose something you are interested in but not a massive fan of otherwise you will come across one sided. I have seen people fail modules for doing an essay on something close to their heart.

(doing my second degree atm! )

Our guidelines include that it has to be totally unbiased, no rambling aimlessly on etc.

Could be done easily, if I can write 12000 on the importance of the Amen break you can do 1/4 of it on Dubstep. Just get into it, you'll end up enjoying it

that'd probably be the main problem with doing an academic essay on it
