I think this one is a goth hybrid of dubstep and tech-house. what I've been listening to a lot recently is the Electronic Explorations podcast, a Benga mix CD, and the Resident Advisor podcast where Surgeon did a combination of dubstep and techno. so it's kinda headed in that direction.
the bassline literally came to me in a dream. it was at Christmas, so I was at my parents' house. they had a little Casio keyboard for some reason, I woke up from the dream, went to the keyboard, and played the bassline. then I got it into Reason so I would remember it.
I made a beat with it, an mp3 maybe a minute long, forgot about it, and then found it again. the original files were lost so I put it in Live and used it as the foundation for a couple different beats. I make a new beat every day and post it on Twitter, or at least, a new beat most days, so point is, I fucked around with this thing a couple different ways.
Then I was watching Battlestar Galactica and there's this bit where she says "I thought about you every day since that moment I died in your arms" so I put it in there, played with it a bit, had the idea to sample the 80s song, and found it matched, badda bing badda boom, track.
