alright, this has been bugging my mind for a while... people keep saying that dubstep is about doing something new, and all... but... the rythm...
(this is very simplified)
just some examples that you propably recognize
but people wouldnt consider this dubstep:
and i wonder why.. some people do half time tracks, or what ever they call them... why not double?

4/4 steppa style rhythms are the don when used correctly.

its too straight for a dubbie feeling. Dub/Reggae are mostly triples and lots shuffly stuff. Ofcourse there are tracks that might be 4x4 and stil dubstep. But overall its about that half time/breaky 2step and garage feeling that it makes dubstep. True about the experimenting, but dubstep is past that time. It's already too defined by the listeners to experiment proper i think. Suprise me if im wrong ofcourse ! I just think it goes like that in every genre.
It begins with experimenting. Listeners define by listen to artists/producers. Other producers/artists copy/learn from the starters of the experiment. It defines more and gets an official genre name. Q&A is the whole thing i think.

but i mean... dubstep is way past what it really came from (thats discussable i guess)

put it on 180 and youll get hiphop. It's about the feeling it gives you. The feeling is settled nowadays. It's hard to avoid the rules of dubstep that has formed in years. People can say it has no rules but it has... Q&A bruv... Q&A

probably a conscious move away from the incessant rolling 2 and 4 feel of dnb imo
you throw that out and you get to play with syncopation more, have space imply the beat for you instead of making it so driving and obvious... the snares on 2 and 4 really kinda puts this big box around the music, which is fine, but it dictates a veerrry specific feel for the music, time is very strictly delineated
to me dubstep is all about the elements running in half-time, full-time, and double time all at once rather than what jazz musicians would should call a 'straight-ahead' feel - driving 2 and 4 time.
thats my 2

i think its spaced out liek that, rather than in just normal time at 70bpm, to allow for the shuffle that is in dubstep. otherwise you wud just have half/quarter beat notes on ya sequencer, but with the 140bpm u can have eigth beat nots aswell, which can give that shuffley feeling, off the beat sort of jig.
