Processing Hats

What do you normally do to yours? I've been a bit slack with mine and generally just run em through a high pass with a touch of reverb on top

Panning! Sometimes even automated panning, it gives it so much more movement.
On some hats gating (either with ADSR or noisegate) will work really nice

I don't bother with high passing mine hehe.. I turn them down / touch of EQ.. Chorus or Phaser sometimes or the delay technique I said in a earlier thread or velocity on a step gate.. I dunno hats are endless what you can do with them and its a preference how you like them it depends tune to tune.

I usually compress tight hats with a subtle 2:1 at a low threshold, fast attack, long release. I usually stick em through a 'room' reverb fairly dry.

cool. I like the idea of automated panning. I have never done that.

I bring the hats forward a few miliseconds then put a bit of delay on em, sometimes anyways. Bitcrush sometimes too.

Yep, mostly panning, also reverb, delay and EQ. But I never compress them

Maybe in drum group only.
EDIT: layering is also sometimes good.

Hehe
I compress my drums as follows:
Kicks - individually + as a group
Snares - as a group
Hats/percussion - as a group
All of the above pass through a drums buss compressor.
OTT OCD!

definately panning, equin, reverbing
delay trick is nice too, it makes the hats swing.
i think i always use like 3-4 different hats.

Highpass and maybe some mid-hi eq. Compress if needed. Add reverb.
For a more creative groove i use a shortish quantized delay (most times dotted eighths) with ping pong enabled. Autopan is good sometimes for movement. I don't usually use modulation fx (phasers etc) as most of the time the hats are the main part of my hi-end and I like them bright. Oh and bitcrushing and distortion are good if you are after a harsh sound.

automate the dry/wet of a bitcrusher! if you do it in a subtle way you can get a really nice variation of tone...
then reverb after to smooth it.

Not a great deal, slight panning, eq and reverb, maybe change the attack, should probably dedicate more time to them really

put lot of effort in choosing the hats instead of processing them

Indeed. I'm working on a track and I'v browsed throw hundreds of hihat samples but still not happy

They just do not fit with my track and all sounds false.

I find that my own few white noise generated hats fit my shit better than most of the real thing.
Hats.rar
Uploaded them as well.

Nice one. Have never been happy with the hat samples i use, might aswell try yours. What processing did you do on the white noise?

Did these like 6 months or more ago, so I can't really remember, but I mainly used different filters(with different envelopes) and a bit of distortion, reverb, and of course EQ. Oh and the phase shift caused by really short delays(gives very metallic results)

Hi I've been told my hats have been a little cold and sterile so I've tried a little harder to bring them to life and they are sounding like this
http://www.zshare.net/audio/57226673a1b7f947/
its only a 3 second loop but I've toned the reverb down, tried the delay on them thats been mentioned. Run them through a bit of saturation and used some excitation to bring out the higher frequencies.
Can anyone tell me if I'm heading in the right direction? and what can be done with them?
