is it better to build a tune that you know sounds fat disipte it not quite fitting into a genre...
or
make a tune that fits perfectly into a genre like dubstep thus reaching and catering for a huge audience, despite the fact that it may have done before...
its just that it seemsthat in the last few weeks increasing amounts of people on this forum are talking about genres and classification...
and a preoccupation with something like that can be dangerous for a developement in style...

isn't the answer obvious (cliche)
of course people are going to say it's better to do your own thing and make better music than trying to force it to be something that it is not.
However if your trying to compose music for a certain style because you are just looking to analyse it and find out how it ticks then by all means do that, its just not a very musical / creative way of doing things

well if you work within the dubstep tempo - you'll find 90% of the time, dubstep heads will appreciate it, even if you do your own thing..
I personally just work at 140-145bpm unless I am making hiphop..... and it seems to be received as dubstep when to me, its just something ive made.
Who gives a fuck if you ain't following a formula...... oh wait there isn't one.
Its better to just create and if people like it, they like it if they don't, they don't.

They'll ALWAYS be other people who like it even if the majority don't... It's just finding your own target audience!

I'd say make the sik tune. However if you are doing a tune for a dubstep label, I would stick with the genre and do your tune on the B-side.

probly a rubbish answer but i feel you have to mix the diffrences like ok keep it into the genre but........also add ur flavor if sumthing isnt 'dubstep' but sound awsome in your eyes keep it!

Guess the question is are you in it for the money or in it for the music.
Honestly, if I could make a good living selling out and making cookie cutter or even cheesy pop-step dubstep yeah I'd do it.
But the reality is that I will never pay my bills let alone get rich making music, so I definitely am in it for the music.
