I just finished extracting the main whiny instrument from the chorus of Ohio Players' Funky Worm and I thought that the new technique may be of interest to some of you.
I detailed and illustrated the technique here
http://photosounder.com/blog/2009/03/in ... -worm.html , but long story short it consists in editing the spectrogram of the sample in question in Photoshop.

When hip-hop producers catch on to this in like 10 years, it's gonna be nuts.

Heh, which makes me wonder what kind of previously untouched/untouchable samples will be cleaned and used ad nauseam when this thing catches on with them. Surely there must be samples out there that would have been used a lot if they hadn't been "ruined" by undesirable extra sounds.

Yeah, that at Melodyne DNA will open up a lot of records or even drum breaks...very interesting. Wish this thing wasn't PC only.

You have to listen to understand - the technique they use isolates JUST the synth from Funky Worm, as I understand, you should be able to isolate any of the instruments.
