Making dubstep bass like stenchman/16bit with the Malstrom?

im not too keen on the subtractor in reason. its good for bassline/4x4 bass, but ive been told the malstrom is the key to good, dirty dubstep bass. i know it's what stenchman uses, so i've had a go fiddling with things but everything ends up sounding too muddy and unclear.

any advice on the best stock samples to open in it to edit? or do i need 2 get hold of some refills?

are there any decent bass refills for it?
thanks in advance :D

Scream 4

Make a small pattern with low notes/octave, fuck with the filter freq, fuck with the shaper. Browse through different waves while the pattern is playing.

Learn how malstrom's modulator works. Use filter and amp envelope.

Ya the Scream 4 and proper EQing are kind of the key things for making those type of basslines in reason. When it comes to choosing the synth, both the malstrom as well as the subtractor get the job done. I actually prefer the subtractor.

Woo subtractor ftw! I only really use malstrom for rises and effects/ambience *shrugs*

Malstrom is capable of so much more than Subtractor in terms of basslines. (but not as much as Thor haha)

While Malstrom doesn't allow for pulse width modulation on the oscillators like the Subtractor, it does have the usefull shift control instead.

Good default oscillator waveforms to use include:

Sine + shaper switched on
Square
Saw
PWM

Use the modiltors to control things like shift, index and the filter cutoff.

Malstrom is capable of making some beast basses without any fx added on. I'm not going to tell you all my secrets, needless to say, keep experimenting!

By the way, read the online manual from the 'help' toolbar menu. If you understand what each aspect of Malstrom does, it will give you a greater understanding of how you can twist the sounds into bad ass basslines!

its a bit old now im not sure if you have seen it, but if you search on the search bar there is actually a stenchman fill which has 5 dr rex loops in it, has some thor patches malstrom patches and subtractor patches which are quite good, you can mess around with it and make your own sounds from stenchmans presets.
not sure if you have already found it on here, if not download it its a good refill for making dubstep in reason! :)

yeah stench uses the malstrom most i tihnk, the free patches he did are all on malstrom. you can get great sounds out of either, i found the malstroms lfo was a bit easier to get just right at first but you can get deffo some powerful stuff from both.
