I looked a bit on older posts, wikipedia, the internet but can't find what I'm looking for, at the risk of teasing I'll ask here.

I'm new to Dubstep, I know the Skream stuff, Benga etc... I want to get in depth and learn a bit more about the hisory, early artists, obscure artists etc. I live in a small town in the states. Point me in the right direction?

Thanks

jump onto youtube and check out some tracks, hit up the "Dubs" section, and you can find some seriously awesome tunes from bedroom producers.
As for places that sell dubstep, im from Australia and there are very few record stores that stock dubstep, and even then the selection is not as vast as you would like. Chemical Records and Red Eye Records (UK) are the two sites that I get all my dubstep from.

I suppose my only question at this point is someone give me a small list of vinyls or whatever I need to get to get started.

Vinyl is usually the only option (unless you want to go digital).

Yeh focus mostly on vinyl imo digital is cool but i dnt really rate a DJ to highly if all he/she does is insert CD's

Definately vinyl imo but theres some decent compilations on cd that might be worth getting such as the Dubstep Allstars series and the Rinse FM ones. Check Discogs.com for vinyl.
Recommend Rinse.fm although its gone more house & funky oriented in past coupla years. N type, LD,Chef, Brackles, Youngsta and Plastician all play Dubstep, not sure if Skream! is still on there.
Youtube is a good resource for checking tunes and footage from raves etc. Put Skream! in and the topsearch is his almighty mix of La Roux - hairs down the back every time!

all of DMZ, Deep Medi, Tempa, etc. - like said.

somewhat older tracks I suggest:

Coki - Officer
Pinch - Punisher
Loefah - Mud
etc, etc.

I'd check out a lot of old DMZ stuff to get you started.

and, this...

Vinyl is the way to go,
even though I don't have money and end up spending my money on vinyl.

vinyl is the one, though.
