Isn't the history of the UK as a major world political superpower pretty fucking embarrassing? We've not exactly done tonnes of good in our history.

I've got to disagree. There are some groups who have 'hijacked' patriotism and yes, they do use it as a....precursor to racism. But to say that all patriotism is thinlyveiled racism is unfair. There should be no shame in being proud of the country you live in/work in/are from.

I think it is bad not to be proud of your own country at least slightly.

Tacky memorabilia aside, but without wanting to be confused as a bigot or stir up a big debate, I am really upset to think that England are slowly losing there pride and national identity. One thing that I envy about America is that they seem like a very patriotic country, proud to fly the flag both black and white as a nation.

I am definitely not one of your typical 'british bulldog' types and I agree that our political history is nothing to be proud of but, as DanRev mentioned, we have music, art, literature, food and sports etc that we should cherish, embrace and promote without fear of prejudice.

I am happy to come from a multi-cultural country and I truely believe that the introduction of new cultures has brought many good things that now define many of us as people but when hanging a St Georges Cross can sometimes be confused as 'racist' (perhaps not the word i was looking for) and St Patricks Day seems to be celebrated more in England than St Georges Day it does make me fear that we are forgetting the identity once associated with our fine country.

Of course these are only examples and not true ways in displaying pride in our culture but at the same time i feel that some people are so confused they feel this is the only way to assert the 'symbolism' of our culture.

What i fear the most though is that this is by no means the fault of the other cultures and ethnic backgrounds in England today but that of white britain whose views on this are either extreme and beyond passionate or those who are afraid to be proud of what England has to offer in the fear of being seen as racist or politcally incorrect.

Then again I suppose I could be just as to blame by referring to myself in the above as 'English' and not as British...
