im about to buy some studio monitors to really suite my production, let alone any sort of audio production. any suggestions??

some brands i should be looking for, like top of the line.
and also, brands i should NOT be looking for, or wasting my time with.

considering im creating electronic, i want my low frequencies to be there as well. does this mean a clean sub woofer, or just smooth monitors??

i have an amp in which i run my computer into, which powers my speakers. help!!

The best near field monitors I've used are Dynaudio BM6A's. Excellent response in every frequency range including subs. I've had tunes that I thought were reasonably well mixed, played them over the Dynaudio's and realised how muddy they actually are.

That would be reccomendation.

If you want a general idea of what to look for you will most likely want to go for active near field monitors, and depending on the room, not too big. Sound treatment is really important too (some would argue that getting average monitors and spending the extra cash on room treatment would be better). Cheaper options are the KRK Rokit series monitors that alot of people use, or Alesis M1 Active 520's (which I use) or 620's.

I use KRK Rockit 8's and they're great for the price.

Got some Yamaha HS80M recently, I really like them.

Everything else around the same price from good brands aren't as powerful and don't have as low bass response. Obviously not the only two factors to think about, but made me happy. They give a great flat sound as far as my ears can tell, mixdowns have translated onto big systems nicely.

Look out for second hand, found mine including £100 stands for £300 off ebay in perfect condition.

Also search 'monitors' for endless threads of people asking your exact question..

Alesis Active 520's.... REALLY like mine, great monitor - and really flexible if you don't have a perfect room as your studio. Good bottom end - not amazing but definatly enough - and the best part.... cheap as chips!

You want a clear low end, on a reasonable budget, M-Audio BX8a's, thats what I'm rocking, great moniters.

As DS has shit loadsa sub frequencies and sounds far different in clubs than in your studio/home, is it not a good idea to test mixes with a sub?

I quite often mix (and listen to ) Dub with sennheiser HD25 just to get the awsome bass.

What's your budget?

You say you have an amp already - what is it?

BM6As get a good rep, but if you have an amp you might like to try B+W 685s

But it all depends on your budget of course!

you probably want to treat your room, as the HS80s are proven to have plenty of bass. You probably just have a null in your listening position. Also, make sure they aren't placed too close to a wall as they are rear ported and that will affect your low end in horrible ways.

I have hs50... the smaller 5" cone. not that much bass... shoulda spent a bit more n goth the 80s

the 50s are perfect for a smallish room. If you keep them away from the wall about 2ft, they will be much clearer in the low end, you won't get much sub but your kick will be much cleaner and true. Save up, treat your room with some good basstraps, then get the matching sub and you'll be more than happy (although your neighbors won't).

trust me, it's the exact setup i use in my home lab.

im using samson rubicon r5as that i scored for roughly 150 quid converted. really clear high end although severely lacking in the subbass category. i just end up balancing the low end going back and forth between my hi-fi and other systems.

Benga uses Dynaudio BM6a.MK II. Perhaps what he uses is good enough for you.

Not sure why I'm posting this exactly. They make a nice enough sound but I'm kind of aware of not hearing my 'real' music. I've never really thought about it before (got these speakers before I ever cared what music sounded like) but I guess reading up on your speakers could help you choose/adjust them. These are apparently overbassy which would make sense.
