If you had to select 5 Artist, 5 Labels & 5 DJs to represent what Dubstep is about, who would you pick? If possible, please tell me why you've made those choices.
One other question: Are there negative attitudes about Dubstep being made outside the UK by non-uk artists?
Cheers people,
S.

Yep,if you make it outside of the UK without the correct licensing then they WILL find and kill you.

Most amusing

But back in the early / old school hip hop days music NOT coming out of NY was frowned upon.

Would you dislike a track just because of where it came from>????

Personally, No, but some people do & that's why i ask. Some people have a problem with the legitimacy of music if it's not made by a specific race or from a specific area. It shouldn't be that way but it is. Another example is Detroit Techno, a lot of the Detroit artists have a big problem with outsiders making that style of music. They feel their music is a result of their specific set of cultural & geographical circumstances, pretty much like all styles & scenes that spring up.

this sounds like a question being fished for something like an article or a school project.

Correct, but not for an article or school project. It's research for an event. I can't really go into details but it's for a company that has some loose links to old school hip hop but is looking to put on an event which bridges the gap between old school hip hop & what's happening now with different music styles.

It means, are non uk dubstep producer given the same respect & consideration as home grown producers or do people get a bit guarded & precious about "Their" scene.

the guys in the uk on the whole are more innovative imo. some of the out of uk producers hear the stuff coming out of london and just copy it.

Over the last two years there have been as many truly innovative non-UK producers as there have been UK ones. Just as many copycats and bandwagon jumpers inside the UK as there are outside.

By the way people, this isn't for a company that's looking to suck the life out of the scene, they're a company that were made famous by Hip Hop culture, not from modern day product placement telling idiots what's cool. They're simply looking to see what's going on these days.

Dubstep's pretty hard to sum up in 5! My 5 artists needs some tweaking, but still if you wanted to show how varied the world of dubstep is, those are some good examples.
Plus on the subject of non-UK dubstep I think it's pretty refreshing to get a taste of what influences people overseas. The whole dubstep-meets-techno probably wouldn't be so vibrant if we were limited to the UK I think.

and, I don't think there are any negative attitudes towards UK producers; and if there are thats a bit stupid for obvious reasons.
aaand, I agree with 5 not being enough.
