Yeah, open a compressor on the channel you want to sidechain (bass etc)
then on the front of the compressor theres a drop down sidechain box, choose the track you want to effect the compressor from that (Kick).
Then mess about with the parameters and you should get it workin.

So I'm looking at the Cubase tutorial....am I right to asume you can only sidechain layered kicks within a midi chanel. Is there a way to do this if your working with a wave file (kick) on a mono audio track. can you asign an audio chanel as a trigger for the Waves C1? am I making any sence at all?

gonna sound dumb on this one but why would you want to do this, what are the advantages of sidechaining?

one example would be to make your kick drums stand out against a sub bass. if you side chain a kick drum to cut out some volume of a sub bass whenever its activated it would make your kicks much more punchy and crisper than being muffled by all the other similar frequencies in the bass.

The main things it does is either prevent low frequency reinforcement by ducking the bass down a bit with the kick and also it gives things a little pulse as one elements dynamics are controlled by another. A bass pulsing in sympathy to the kick. You can use it subtly to breathe life into your tracks. It stops things being stagnant and can be quite subliminal, or in your face as you want it. You can also make the bass louder on the kicks, too, for a different effect. Play with it and see what your track calls for.

Also, one sound affecting another locks things together nicely. In Logic, Send your kick drum output to a bus, then use the regular Logic compressor and choose the bus you sent the kick to in the sidechain tab. S'easy.

what Emu said.

Another interesting trick is to set up a rhythm part that you don't actually hear in the main output, say a shaker riddim or something/anything. Then throw a gate on your strings or atmos, and sidechain the gate from the 'inaudible' rhythm part. You'll get complex rhythmic gating that no one will have any idea where it's coming from.

you can't. logic only allows sidechaining in pro, not express. check on craigslist; i found a used, legit version of logicpro for 3 bills. sorry dude.

OK, I set up the regular Logic compressor on a bass track to get the sidechain from the kick, and it sounds horrible. There doesn't seem to be any way to "mix in" the amount of side chaining that I want... I guess I'll try the "secret track" method subframe discussed.

Also, is there a way to sidechain with effects that don't have that drop-down menu? I'd really prefer to use it with Blockfish rather than the Logic compressor.

You can adjust the squash using the threshhold... Set it higher for less comp...

I don't think Blockfish sides...
