I have been using Reason for a while and recently I'm getting to grips with the software.

I also have Ableton Live (8 I think) installed on my laptop and I'm wondering if the switch from Reason will be a simple one, or if I will have to pretty much start from scratch learning about the software.

Have the best of both worlds, rewire reason through ableton live.
Live's really easy to pick up, and if you rewire you can still use all the synths and redrum as well.

I think the hardest thing about switching to Ableton is that it's SO easy and intuitive, it's almost hard b/c after using other sequencers, etc it doesn't seem like it should be so easy.

Check out the built it tutorials and watch the Abletoninc youtube videos, then spend some time going apeshit.

O yeh, I forgot about that. So to ReWire, do I have to open Reason before opening Ableton? ( I know nothing about rewiring). And I take it all my sequencing will be done in Ableton.?

You're supposed to open the host first (Live) and then your slave (Reason).

There are lots of tutorials on how to ReWire Reason into Live on youtube. Just search for rewire reason into ableton on Google or Youtube and you'll get the exact instructions.

Note that you can't automate vsts in Reason, only create midi notes for the sequencer. To get stuff to change in Reason you've got to use the automation sequencer in the program where you want it to correspond with what's in Ableton (just make sure the notes don't get carried across or Reason'll won't play in time to Ableton)

I totally agree. I had Ableton installed for a while before I made the switch but I got fed up and got determined to learn Ableton at one point. I had a tune like 2 weeks later and never looked back.

Ableton is so sick, I fucking Love it!

I disagree. Reason is going to take up memory and cpu.. Ableton 8 is the bomb smack and has everything you need is inside. you might as well immerse yourself completely in the program.. If you have any questions pm i have been using the program since 2003.

I'm also very interested in hearing, as I'm in the same situation.

Ok try this out if you are just trying ableton.

Open a midi track . Create a bunch of midi drum clips(impulse), synth clips(vst)..
Freeze the midi track..
Drag all the frozen midi clips in to an open audio track.
It will automatically bounce all the midi clips to audio..
This feature alone should sell you on Ableton..

Do it! And never look back!

i have had reason wired up to cubase sx.., but lately i just can get it hooked up everything seems the same but it keeps saying check your rewire host but i have changed nothing..and i have looked for explanations of this through out the forum and thought this is a pretty close thread to what i am after was wondering if any one could help me.
