Just curious what everyone else is doing...I know everybody's gonna say "it depends on the tune," but I'm curious what you normally do.

I usually have a track drop after 32 bars, but lately I've been doing 16 bar intros if the drop is really minimal, since I figure a dj can still keep it in the mix with the bass turned down. I come from a dnb background, and I would usually have tracks drop after 48-64 bars, and djs would always tell me my intros were too short, so I never really know what the "standard" is...but I think I'm done putting in long intros for djs, since I'm sick of having 6.5 minute tracks.

Mine usually come in around 30 seconds, Don't really like to have an intro shorter than that. I used to have longer intros but I went off them.
I think 30 seconds is plenty of time to be mixed in nicely (in my experience, anyway)

my last few have been like 64 bars or so, but theres quite a bit going on in them tbh.

I don't have formulaic intros/drops.

They come when they come. Sometimes immediately, sometime people gotta wait.

The tune I was working on today has a 64 bar intro, but it just came out like that. I usually try to make 32 bar intros... but whatever rocks the tunes boat really...

Usually I go for a 32 bar intro. I try to keep my tune to like 4 minutes. If the intro is any longer than the tune is going to get longer. The last couple I have been working on have 16 measure intros tho. They may even get extended before it's said and done who knows.

by that time i've beatmatched mixed it in and am in the process of bringing the next one in

I like it at 32. Gives about a minute and enough time to break the track down for the intro. If you go a little longer it is nice for the DJ if he wants to drop your track in early and use some of the sounds for layering. Some people just drop track and hardly have them pitched, others, like myself like to blend them more seamlessly. Dubstep is one of the easier genres to mix because it's lack of speed variation, just knowing the drop is the trick. It's up to you but around a minute is good for my taste. Keep up the tunes!

Although, I've been contemplating an ambient intro that get's straight into it with no drums. Just random pads and shit then, BAM!

Depends on the tune too. If there's no real drop, just maybe a subtle sub that kicks and keeps building, I suppose a 16 bar intro would be fine.

16/32 usually, but I love the big long minimal intros that slowly morph into the track before your very ears.

Also taking a leaf or two from The Orb's psy stylings, for example: Toxygene.

32 is average tho I tend to lean towards 16 bars these days.

The last tune I finished had an 8 bar intro. lol.

i tend to hit the 32 mark just seems to be a better fit for my tunes.
