Cant say the same for hiphop.

Just got back from Madlib at Koko. Very strange night. Heres the thing, theres this club packed with mans loving every word delivered yet somehow the vibes are flat, dead, dead flat, fucked, nothing. It reminded me why i stopped going hiphop nights (and to some extent jungle nights too) and why, in contrast, i'm so *there* in case of dubstep parties..

So here's my theory - we as UK cats dont really have much offerings in terms of hiphop (sure you got mans like Roots Manuva, Rodney P etc but..) so the scene is still entirely 'theirs'. So as some kind of bi-product, as much as we vibe hard on the US deliverance at home and in car when they throw a night we're all left staggering and lost. the vibe is static, vague and pale.. i feel embaressed for MC dropping the sickest rhymes and DJ unleashing bare forward riddims left looking bemused how the crowd is so vacant and constantly needs hyping.. emerge UK hype-man MC ?

Compare this to a DMZ / FWD / Metalheadz / Tru PLayaz night.. fair play the the junglist nights dont much still have same weight but you know you know how ruffige they were cause you were there. Now *that* is some vibes, that is something exciting and positive that you just cannot help but large to. Something homegrown and relateable to,.. your own homegrown sickness

To sum it all up.... we UK lot listen, enjoy & appreciate our (often excellent) imported sonics but the only thing that truly gets us fuelled is something we've touched ourselves.

Yeah hip hop fans in this country have this propensity for standin still, something I never understood. Might be a little different if you went to see jigga/ any of the southern lot...?

i def get u on the hip hop thing. too many posh white kids with backpacks that really want to 'get it'..

and while youre at it, cop his album "beauty and the beat". it is by far one of the, if not THE (and quite debatable i might add), most innovative hiphop albums in the last 10 years.

most kids dont really dance at hiphop shows tho. unless youre a b-boy, there'll be no "milo in the dance" for the rest of the crew. just alot of head noddin, hand throwin, knee knockin and bow throwin.

^^^^^^This is true. It's not really a u.k. vs. u.s. thing, it's just the way it is all over the world. If I go to a hip hop show in s.f., or anywhere for that matter, there isn't anyone dancing...'cause these fools don't wanna get sweat on their fuckin' white t, they don't wanna scuff their shoes, and they don't want to wrinkle their expensive ass pants. They just sit their muggin' anywone and everyone, try to jump girls that got boyfriends, and all that stupid shit. And if you dance, they'll mug your ass too like "WTF are you doing?!" That's the way it is everywhere I've been. The worst thing about it too is that it's just a bunch of poser ass white kids trying to act out what they saw on t.v., trying to be all hard in their little white ass club...why the hell aren't they across the street in the "black" club...'cause their asses can't act hard in there. There is very little mixing of culture at hip hop shows...from my experience...and it's very segregated. That's the way I feel about most clubs/bars though, regardless of the music. I'm sure there are places where people are gettin' down crazy to hip hop...I just haven't been there yet. It's true that there are some sick breakdancers around...and the asians have seemed to take this shit over with crazy skill. Down south there are a shitload of wicked asian break crews. There are still some battles around, but people don't seem to know anymore...a lot of people think that shit's wack. The bulk of the culture has shifted from the artistic expression of knowledge through skill (breaking, djing, mcing, graphing), to how tight you look and what you're gonna drive home in. It makes me sad. Even at underground, conscious show, the crowd is usually about some bullshit.

It's more or less universal. When hip-hop is performed live to the devoted followers it's more of a head-nodding thing than a dancing thing. It's been that way here in Denmark as far as I can remember. But if the dj play it out in the club people will dance to it. Off course this comes with some exceptions. Fitty, The Game and artists like that will prevail over the real concious backpack artists. So as far as I see it it has alot to do with the context in which the music is presented. People are more enclined to let themselves go in a club than at a concert. I've seen the tuffest b-boys all dressed up in their fanciest gear getting sweatty in the clubs tyring to impress the ladies while the same guys just stood there nodding their heads at the last jam...

No one really dances here in Aus either to Hip-Hop. Just the way it is.

On another light note. Aussie hip hop is known as Skip-Hop named after a kangaroo named skippy . Its what ethnics who live in Australia call Aussies (skips)

It's just not cool to dance to hip hop, i've seen people shot for a foot tap before

- Rap/Crunk/RnB parties in brighton are essentially a meat market.
- The UK Hip Hop/Grime heads are a bit moody, but sound people.
- Backpackers like me kinda stick to a lighthearted, Bay-area vibe.

I rarely go to hiphop events these days cos I find the atmosphere lifeless and dull at hiphop nights alot of the time. I saw Sway a few months ago and he was good, the audience wasn't so interested though, or at least that's what it felt like... only real interraction was when Sway had to really work for it with call & response etc

This is where dubstep wins hands down! Dunno what other places are like, but the dubstep dances in Brizzle & London are usually LIVE! No prompting needed, the raves go off!

on topic, seems like hyphy might be the saving grace in terms of bringing some party fun-ness back to hip-hop. mystified by lack of it in same way as i was in the grime room at rinsessions (ministry a while back). biggest names, tunes going off, everything rosy - and to a man, ppls stood around arms folded, looking grim. as kode 9 said in his show the tues after, 'large up all crew waiting for a bus inside ministry on saturday. what's wrong with you??'...
