I never got into remixing, i guess cause i never had the chance to do it. but i see people dropping remixes all the time. What i want to know is, what can i remix and what cant i touch?

Am I going to get in trouble for doing it? And what happens when you make a really good remix and gets published, do you have to pay royalties on it.

I come from a hip hop background where using samples is kinda a no no, unless you pay for the sample or mess it up beyond recognition. But remixing is different is it not?

if you havent got permission, remixing IS sampling. legally no difference.

or just white label bootleg it

I guess that clears things up. But in hip hop you still need to clear the samples. Biz Markie got his ass sued in 89 for putting out some stuff. So i guess just do it on the DL.

Hip hop is on a totally different level from dubstep. Even underground hiphop, if it doesn't get in the charts or anything who is going to know? If it is a major label type thing, they have offices full of lawyers to sort that shit out. But yeah dubstep is too small. It isn't worth anyones time or money to go after us small timers so it is pretty much a free for all as it stands. Now if someone decides to take someone to court over a dubstep release and wins, that sets a precedent and we will all re-think what we are doing. Until then fuck it.

Still kinda shocks me some of the tunes that are coming out these days. I mean sampling is one thing but there is a line you can cross where you are just blatantly stealing someones tune and putting your name on it. I don't have any problem with bootlegs and shit I do it myself but for fucks sake give it out for free. Charging for it is pretty shady.

I remix from time to time (ie a lot of the time) and am of the understanding that you're "safe" as long as you're not making commercial gain from it...there's nothing stopping me being sued though or w/e.

yeah all remixes are pretty safe to do.. although in the past i've had myspace & youtube accounts disabled because of remixing songs, even when i'm giving them away for free.. but yeah if you wanna do it, do it.
