Cargo Records - Independent Distribution Worldwide

Hello. We are Cargo. We distribute recorded music on physical and digital formats - this is our website address;
www.cargorecords.co.uk
You can buy records and CDs there if you want, but we're not here to try to talk you into doing that. Of course, we exist to sell, so let's not pretend otherwise, but the choice is yours.
So what is this post for? No pussyfooting - we're looking for labels. We already have a bunch, but we're greedy and we want more. If you are releasing music of the type under regular discussion on this forum and are looking for a reliable distributor who can put your records in the places they should be, and pay you what's due when that happens, we're always interested in hearing from you.
Whether you're an ambitious new venture poised on the brink of launching into the murky waters of audio commerce, or an established imprint in the mood to improve your current situation, hit us up ... although please bear in mind that, along with the rest of the planet (bar Members of Parliament) we are not adrift on an ocean of cash, so you will need to be largely self-supporting.
Is all. Cheers. Cargo.

Interesting.
What are the digital stores that you distribute to?

At the risk of appearing somewhat arrogant, it would probably be easier to make a list of the places we don't supply. We deliver to all the main outlets, including those which are frequently mentioned in this forum, but beyond that our digital reach is worldwide. Put it this way : any online store where Hyperdub tracks are (legitimately) available - that is a store supplied by Cargo.
Email or PM if you want more details. I won't abuse the forum by going into the specifics here ... unless, of course, there's anyone else out there interested.

Wow, can't say a vinyl distributor looking for labels turns up every day. I hope its not going to be a matter of P&D ing a load of labels who the other distributors have turned down though, that would certainly lead to a lot of substandard music in the shops.

in response to this comment - there isn't a day that passes when we're not looking for new labels, and in that respect cargo is no different to any other distributor interested in staying in business. that doesn't mean, however, that there's no element of quality control, and we will always make a judgement based on both aesthetic and commercial considerations before we commit time and resources to representing a label. i point this out not to argue against what pozzoli's saying, but more in an attempt to dispel the fairly common misconception that independent distributors are in the habit of taking an exploitative approach to the labels they work with and a cynical view of the buying public.
on the subject of "substandard" music though... take comfort from the knowledge that a ropey tune is unlikely to attract manufacturing investment anyway. the "p" part of a p&d agreement is basically an unsecured loan, or put another way, a gamble, so if a track is one that only a mother could love, you can be pretty sure that no distributor is going to consider chucking the fat end of a thousand pounds at it in the vague hope that if it exists on wax enough people will be mad enough to pay money for it.
and setting all such idealistic concerns aside for a minute, you could always try this : don't buy it if you don't rate it!
