Ive really been considering this too... same boat. I know my arpeggios, scales, and can come up with riffs far batter on guitar than on a midi keyboard
Dont know if they make it anymore but roland used to make an audio to midi device... just looking for it now... GI-20??? might be worth looking on ebay for.
Also, theres the gk pickup that sits under ya bridge, and fender also made a new mexican strats roland ready!
Had a mate in college that used one with massive and abynth and raved about it!

Looks cool but aren't there free audio to MIDI vst fx? Probably not as high qual but would save money which is always good.

that would involve recording your guitar as audio then converting to midi
this is to trigger your software or hardware instruments using your guitar as a midi controller in real time

Wow, that would be amazing live... I wouldn't risk the unreliablilty of it, even though it does look pretty note for note, I wouldn't risk something going wrong.

Roland's hex pickup already does that, try before you buy either but my money's on the hex

I was under the impression said plug in did that as well, but I never really looked into it.

I have a Godin Multiacc sold body calssical that plugs into my Roland GI-20 via Roland proprietary GK connector.
I use it all the time
Guitar looks kinda like this:

except mine's sunburst.
And I plug the 13 pin cable into this
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GI20
which has a USB port on it. The GI-20 Midi driver comes right up in my daw.
Flashbulb plays on a Schecter -live- with a roland GK pickup. It's dope!
You can also outfit existing guitars with the GK pickup.

I have one of these on my strat, but the Godin tracks a lot better.
