Question for Macc...

Just wanted to ask your professional opinion mate, having read some of your posts it's plainly clear you know what you are talking about (which makes a refreshing change)

I'm at the stage now when I'm going to upgrade the quality of my overall sound/mixes with the SSL DUENDE mini, as DV have got some good offers on expanded models (32 channel version including channel strip/Bus compressor plugs) for a fairly good price.

I'm looking to pay a bit extra for the Drumstrip plug as well as they've just discounted the plugs on the SSL website.

My question being, does this extra processing help/interfere at the mastering stage or is it a case of leaving things as neutral as possible with the mix?

I appologise if this question's been asked in a roundabout way before, i have searched the forum, there's plenty on m,astering and mixing, nothing involving SSL at the mixing stage BEFORE mastering.

Just wanna get that in before I get flamed!!

:o

Not in that thread the other day, haha. We all have our moments.

Duende is a big thumbs up for sound, bit eeururur on the reliability though from what I understand. but very nice sound for sure.

I'm not really sure I follow to be honest. You're asking 'how would making my mixes sound better help'? :6:

Irrespective of what plugins you're using, just make your mix sound the best you possibly can, so there's nothing more you can do to improve it in your mind. Or until you've so chronically got the arsehole with it you want to throw your computer out the window.

What the Duende will give you is better quality like-for-like processing, it shouldn't be on top of your existing plugins, rather it should replace equivalents (crap eq out, duende in) and sit alongside any others :)

That's a fairly strange mental image i can't seem to get out of me head now thanks Macc!!!!!

Anyway, to clarify you are right and kind of answered the question IE using the SSL plugs to replace the Logic EQ's Compressors and such like.

Not that the Logic stuff is bad by any means, I just wanted that SSL 'sound'. Having used the 4000+ console and the infamous buss compressor, i fancy a bit of that renowned rock solid 'punch' and 'air' in my mixes now. It's difficult to put into words what the SSL stuff does to music, it kind of add transparency and weight at the same time with a bootload of clarity thrown in for good measure.

Cheers anyway mate, I didn't really realize you could do away with the Logic plug ins/or use them alongside the SSL plugs. Nice!

I'm looking forward to getting to grips with the box.
Incidentally i heard that most of the bugs were associated with the bigger Duende, the top of the line model, which is no longer available. It seems the Duende mini has ironed out most of these problems.

Now if only i can get that picture of you with your trolleys over your trousers running down the street out of my head......
:-o

Eops, hows things mate? Yeah Styrax release very soon, artwork being completed as i speak, they sent a dub to Laurent Garnier to get some feedback, this was his reply as they sent me an email,
feedback-laurent garnier :

realy like the deep atmosphere of this ep
will present it on the radio
Thanks
Laurent Garnier

and no, i didn't make it up. Trust.

So that really made my day considering it's a Dubstep/2 Step EP, he's a well renowned Techno DJ/musician and Styrax are a classic Techno/Deep House label. Nice to think they're trying out new things and are receptive to the scene in general. I'll give the heads up when it's finally out.

Cheers!

Thanks man.

What bugs me is that a) we never sell any records and b) all these tunes are 5+ years old and I never get the time to write anything these days. Haven't even programmed a beat in over a year!
