How do you get the really punchy snare, the ones like seven uses in his tracks?

Been trying layering different snares but cant get anything like his. I also take it that he probably uses compression, but again im quite new so would no what to do there either.

Thanks in advance..

search the forum, especially the production thread.

otherwise: distortion, eq, intense compression w/ slow attack, fast release.

Pre-process stuff, if you find a nice combinations of layers you like ... Bounce them un-processed so its just the one snare, then put it back in and work from it in there..

I dunno about anyone else but I find working with snares (mainly) in layers during the tune..each going to its own channel to a bus or whatever tends to get poor results, so I get the levels right on the individual channels and don't process it, then bounce that into .. /packs/my samples/snares and then 1) I can use it in another tune and 2) its just the one sample and can process it how I like from there instead of making all the same changes to each channel and easier to go back on myself if I do something what fucks it up.

Don't just layer snares either... I like hits from metal pieces or random wood-type hits as high end, filtered kicks as the low or a electronic snare and then use a natural snare as the mid for natural snap and lots of character!

Co-Sign.

I generally only use on real snare...what I'll do is lower the gain so it's barely heard amongst the other layers on top. Concrete and bullet-impacts, metal, chains, computer clicks on top. :)

Not sure what your after but For punchy snares try the vengence essential club sounds pack which is the bolox

adding a snare layering it with a gated/reverbed clap and lowing the pitch of them both works good

also adding few minor fx aswell reverb synced delay but never to much in fact very little

you need to pick the right samples really

I use a really flat sounding snare with the lower freq's to give it the punch, then layer it with a clap over the top.

A tip would you don't need to go mental with layers to get a good snare, just use good samples to start with - less is more!

1. use different layers, like 2 nice sounding snares, and a gunshot or something
2. Mildly distort(optional)
3. Compress to fuck, set a harsh treshold and ratio, then adjust the attack so it will be really punchy(100-200 msecs) and adjust the release so the end of the sound won't come breathing up before it ends and also, the release won't interfere with the next hit.
4. EQ
5. Send it through another bus with all the other drums, apply EQ and compression(optional)

some snare samples have a mid-rangey kick behind them

they work nicely to "punch" through the track
