even if the person doing the live set has some good tunes i always find that after a while it will sound very samey. the first tune may be good but coz all the others are made by the same person they are usually earlier/lesser versions of that first tune or they at least sound very similar.

it works well with established acts but that's only coz they have loads of great music that has been signed, pressed and rinsed in the clubs etc.. with a live set u just don't get the same quality control that u get with a good dj.

anyone agree/ disagree?

Can you clarify a bit? You mean a live PA(aka-not DJ'ing) or just someone who isn't well-known playing a DJ set?

Either way, I don't agree, but I want to know which one ya mean, specifically...

personally I prefer live sets.

as long as the tunes are good full stop, i dont really give a shite though

proper live sets are what it's about for me, so much more diverse and interesting then some guy just playing records.

amatures just suck in general, regardless of format.

As I said earlier, in either scenario, I don't agree, I'll expound a bit on that...

I do think that someone's sound in a Live PA(I'm just gonna use that term) enviroment is bound to be more singular than someone playing a dj set. With that said, I don't hold that as a negative, either. I think if someone's playing w/iterations on a theme, many good things can come of that, for instance. Also, sometimes people just hit on something good in their sets and can play a lot of great tracks that will sound kinda similar, but all be great(Lucine was *always* like this for his live sets, and always worth seeing because of it).

One big thought I would like to add though, is this: I find it discouraging that someone who can be a really great producer feels the need to learn to DJ to play out. Or, even worse, they don't even learn to DJ but still play sets in clubs on decks instead of finding a way to perform their own music in their own way live, more comfortably(if this is even possible). DJ'ing/Producing are so different, and while dubstep is a dj-based scene, I'd still like to see more producers playing on laptops, at least they'd be able to do live edits to their tracks, that, to me, would be as neat as a blend in many instances.

I agree pretty much, only a few people can pull it off, and have enough and diverse enough material to make it worthwhile. Live sets of just one person's tunes tend to bore me a bit, and can be pretty self indulgent at times. it depends what you're after though, some people want to get inside an artists head and for that, fair enough. Personally I think entertaining people comes first and not that many people have written enough really good music to not make it worthwhile including anyone else's.

Funny that I can think of loads of established producers that do copies of their own hits, they even use the same drumkit and sounds...

of course they are rubbish, that is why they are still amateur. When theyve gained the skill of stunning an audience with a live show, or a dj set or whatever then they will become established..

Most Dj's and producers worth mentioning play mostly from Dubplates that haven't been "signed" or "pressed" - in fact very few Dubstep artists are "signed" - they just send their music to a label, usually owned by another artist, who choses whether they want to release it on that label.

Peverelist owns Punch Drunk, yet he's been known to release on Tectonic. Mala owned DMZ , but released on other labels withDigital Mystikz.

They aren't signed to anyone, they have made music, and chose to try and sell some of it.

Dubstep is still (at it's core) following the same pattern adn rules as Jungle did, and Dub.

So for that reason an amatuer could be one of the most gifted producers, or live players, they just simply haven't released on a label yet.

Would you of told Appleblim, Ramadanman, Mala, most people on Deep Medi, that they made shit tunes, and were crap when they either deciced to make a label to press their tunes, cut dub of their tunes, or while theym were sending track after track to a label to get pressed.

i think a good place to start with this would be how to define an "amateur" dubstep artist against "professional." plays out? released tunes? cuz it ain't that hard to do either of those things...

for me, i dont judge a night's performers on whether they are playin live or dj'in - live is more interesting for sure, but who gives a shit as long as your head is boppin and your arms a flailin'? can be hit or miss with both, pro or otherwise, no? i've heard plenty of live sets that'v been bangin straight through, ditto dj sets, but then iv also heard the opposite.

i dont think you can generalise either, each dj/producer is unique (more or less) eh

In the early to mid 90s, 3 of us did Live PAs with a bunch of analog and first gen hybrid gear that was daisy-chained together with MIDI and CV - gate mechanisms, unprogrammed, no pre-sequencing.

Now days, people push the space bar on their lap tops and rock out with their cock out to their own pre produced music, and many times arent even doing anything. Can I show up and play a CD?

Then theres always the unplugged electronic music live set...
