When mastering a track, whats a good RMS level to work towards? Is it subjective depending on the track or is there an average db level that you should be working towards?
Any help on this would be great. Thanks

i dont think it matters.. its directly proportional to the peak level which is the one you need to worry about
rms is more to do with the average power output of a speaker..

RMS = Peak / SQRT(2)...
So its the peak is of equal importance...

it matters entirely as RMS is the perception of volume.
different analyzers view it differently but if yr using RND's inspector, -9 to -6 is pretty standard. Yes-- that's loud as hell!

That's true but it only tells you the instantaneous RMS, and not the averaged RMS which is far more relevant and informative.
However, RMS as a measure of loudness is only useful up to a point; the spectral content, via Fletcher Munson, dictates just as much about a track's perceived loudness as the raw RMS value.
Remind me to write a waffle in here later

the relation between peak and RMS depends on the waveform shape. 1/Sqrt(2) is true for pure sine waves.

While you're at it get yourself a VU meter. PSP do a free one I think.
