I'd go for the one that looks like a stun gun, personally.

I've used an Edirol before, they're quite nice and clear I thought.

Yeh I would highly recommend the Zoom Handy Recorders, I picked up a Zoom HD2 for about £130 and I can honestly say it is one of the best pieces of musical hardware I have ever bought, it records in 24bit/96kHz wav and is very simple to use and has enough features/inputs and good enough quality to justify the post 100 mark, I just walk around knockin' objects and making fucked up sounds then build customs drum and fx library's for Kontakt. Beats searching the net for that type of stuff and it's makes your sound palette totally original.
It even does direct recording to mp3, great for live sets where the quality don't have to be super.

+1 We went sampling with that thing too... I was blown away...

+1 on the zoom, used my dads and it has fantastic quality - awesome pre-arm to get levels right, mixer built in, the h4 has 2 stereo mics in the top with inputs too. very nice. takes cards (needed as only has something like 32mb of internal) but all in all a very top notch bit of kit. i was looking at the h2 as its a bit sexier and cheeper. get em in a kit with a case and the mic fluff too, dads got some awesome flyover recording, steam trains and lightening.
in terms of field recording, the only times i've done it was using mini disk recorders (2 of, rack mounted) and i set one up direct from the desk, and 2 ambient mic's capturing the crowd on either side, so post gig it could all be mixed together nice like, and having 2 ambient mics you have the option to keep loud mouths out of the recording

if using the zoom for recording gigs(live bands). is monitoring possible or would i just have to trust the in-house sound engineer and just plug into the desk?
