Most definitely don't do that... Unless you want your computer to just not work :P

Try defragging it, and if that doesn't work then I'm not really sure whether your backups are going to work as they were made after the problem had started.

Defrag and see what happens. If it still throws up errors then do do a deep level format and reinstall everything - if it's still throwing up errors buy yourself a new HDD, they're cheap as chips now. Can get a 1TB HDD for <£80.

Not much info to go on... but I would hazard a guess it's not fatal as if it was something more serious like bearings going you wouldn't get an error - it just wouldn't work and fuck up. So it's probably just messy as hell and needs defragged... when degragging disable screen savers and fire up task manager and disable all none essential services and program and leave it be, depending on the size of your disk (fnar) it could take hours.

My screen went after about a year and ended up using an old TFT I had lying around. Then the fan went on it so now it overheats - pile of shite, and it wasn't a cheap one either. Sits under my bed now on a cake cooling tray and acts as a seeding box for my torrents.
