Audio Interfaces?

I'm in desperate need of a midi keyboard, but the latency I experience at the moment is so poor that I'm going to have to upgarde from my pretty basic Edirol UA-1X audio interface. I'm looking at getting a M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface and wanted to know if anyone had one and could tell if it was any good or if people could recommend anything else?

i've had a fast track pro for about 6 months, and it worked well until about a week ago, when it started distorting the audio. so i'm looking for something different.

I forgot to mention I've got about £150 to spend. How much did it cost?

DO NOT GET A FAST TRACK PRO

-I REPEAT-

DO NOT GET A FAST TRACK PRO.

I have one and it's absolutely shit. The get it running I had to re install the drivers around 40 times. If your a PC user it will constantly pop up saying "This has not passed Windows logo verification." If you ever switch the FTP off while your PC is on it will cut to a blue screen and start dumping your physical memory. If you use Ableton it will constantly pop up "The ASIO sample rate is not supported" you'll have to reboot Ableton until it decides to work, when it does it is likely playback will be crackly, poppy, and distorted, to remedy this you need to go into preferences and fiddle with your sample rate and latency repeatedly until it decides to playback how it should.

You also can't set both your DAW and outside audio to the FSP at the same time, otherwise the "ASIO sample rate blah blah" will haunt your dreams.

All in all. Worst piece of shit i've have ever purchased and wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. I am undecided on what to replace it with as I don't have firewire =( If you do go Presonus. I actually think I would take more pleasure in taking a baseball bat to it Office Space style rather than offload it to some other poor sod.

Once again,

DO NOT GET A FAST TRACK PRO.

Have a look at their forum, I am def not the only one with problems.

Anything you decide on take a gander at their forum first. I've def learned that.

I think its more the drivers themselves. I've not the most powerful PC, 1.86ghz, 2GB RAM, but should cope well enough i'd think.

You can get a premium card for a great price and never need to buy again here...

Nothing to do with that...

I dunno, I'm biased obviously, but £150 for an m-audio vs £180 for RME is just a complete and utter no-brainer. Never mind the IO, the convertors/sound quality and the rock solid performance, Digicheck itself is worth £100+ easy.

... That does read rather like an advert doesn't it  But still. It's true!!

Guess I won't be getting a Fast Track Pro then! Cheers for all the responses :)

I've got a Fast Track Pro, and even though its cheap, its super entry level... and everything I read in this thread so far is true.

I'm still using mine because I have no other alternatives.

I find it only distorts audio when my cpu is overloading... but even then, that can happen fairly easily because my laptop's a POS.

Although getting it up and running on XP wasn't too much a challenge for me.

Still I'd recommend spending a bit more money and getting a proper interface to start, and I think in general you want to avoid usb 2.0

Firewire is a better option, or if you have a desktop get it thrown inside.

Usb 3.0 comes out later this year... I might get a new computer then and make the leap with my interface.
