So on Reason I merely right click on the knob of choice and there, Automation is ready.

Is there a way to automate like this on Cubase? or is it simply a case of trial and error.

Also hovering over a button or knob on lets say Albino doesn't tell what the name of it is for when you which to go searching for it.

Any ideas?

just do it via automation lanes

sorry for being dense but what does that mean?

I click the drop down on my audio channel and select a lane for the knob I want to automate but sometimes it can take a while to find the actual thing I want to automate.

Is there a quicker way?

I use Cubase but the handiest automation tools are in FL I think. Very comfortable.

In Cubase it's a little bit more tricky but you can also draw automation by right clicking and choosing a draw tool but you just have to open automation track first and then select the parameter you want to automate. By default it's channel volume.

yeah I got you. I'm rewiring into cubase at the mo. Automation on reason is so so easy - just right click and select edit automation.

It's just when I want to automate say Papen's blue it's a nightmare looking through a zillion parameters in the drop down options.

yea just click on the default parameter name and it'll bring up a menu up that you can browse through all available parameters you can automate

What version of Cubase you on mate? In 5 its pretty easy, there's a R (read automation) and W (write automation) at the top of every synth and plug in you use. Just click the W button and mess about with the nobs and it creates a automation channel for that specific parametre right underneath, tis a breeze. But im not sure if they put a feature like this in earlier versions all i know is i love Cubase 5

no luck on that front unfortunately - though i wonder if it's a setting i can choose...............

load your vst


expand the vst automation lanes


left click the first parameter lane, select more...


there's a list of all the parameters you can choose to automate and have a blast

to do it on an insert effect choose whatever channel it's on and it will be listed under insert under more

To clarify for others:

1. Setup vst with midi track as usual.

2. press write (W) at the top of the synth after drawing in chosen melody. fiddle to your heart's content with knob of choice over a loop of your melody.

3. press read enable (R) at top of synth to hear your automation back and open the lane in which the automation has been drawn in on. In my cubase the automation lane does not 'pop open' - it remains hidden - but it's first on the drop down now which is nice.

4. big up deadly habit and cartoon head!

I'm already working on some crazy tripped out shizz. This will probs be easier than Reason i can imagine........

yea and under the context menu you can use the show/hide all automation option

yea and you have the different shape generators on top of the line or pencil tool so don't forget that
