Synthesising drums is something I've never really been bothered to do before. Kick drums are easy, snares and claps harder imo.. One day I may have a go at creating a few kits
I am about to record a set of drum and percussion samples this week though.

I would if I didn't love the sound of old drum machines so much

I've been doing this alot, hats are my favourite to synthesize though, especially with my own methods..
EDIT: oh yeah, I have a patch for alchemy, that creates all kinds of gabber kicks, just tweak the knobs and all different, but still phat kick emerges..

I've been thinking about starting to try this just over the last week or so, actually. Any tips on synthesizing drum samples in Reason? In the few minutes I got to play with it I got some nice kicks out of the Subtractor, but I'd be interested in hearing any advice on other samples (like cymbal washes, etc).

there's tons of free drum synths and they can make all kinds of blips and bloops and smacks and cracks and you can mix and match them and cut groups for hihats and cymbals are pretty standard
i'd say synthing your own drums is the way to go, but layer in a little sampling/sliced break and itll sound a bit more realistic
you're gonna find that drumsynths for kicks are just swept frequency generators (fl kick, bdx, drum synth live) and for snares they are just bandpassed noise generators with fast envelope settings (drumsynth live, drumular, sdx) and claps are kinda the same as snares but just retriggered fastly from what i can tell

try having a pitch envelope going from high to low really fast for the beginning of a snare/tom depending on how much noise you add and the filter used

there's some threads on the grid that have how to synthesize stuff like 808 kicks etc in reason

I synthesize most of my drums. I think it gives you so much more control and a more unique sound. Plus then you can automate the synth and get way more variations than you could with a sample
