I thought i would start this thread to gather some info on subtractive construction.

Is the idea to strip frequencies etc to create more space in your mixes?

Is it sampling your own or others' music and striping down to build up a new sounds via resampling?

I'm looking for posts on how others use this idea to create their sounds and the +s and -s of the idea.

on first thoughts a + would be that you are sculpting your own sounds therefore the piece your working on is closer to you own personal tastes.

If this has already been covered here somewhere pls post the link.

well it's not so much construction a lot of the time, but fitting sounds into the mix as to not muddy up a certain frequency range. sculpting a sound with eq is a whole other beast though which is to enhance or reduce aspects to give it a certain flavor or character and even then when mixing it you'll generally have some more eq work to do to get your levels where you want them.

unless you're talking about subtractive synthesis that's a whole other topic.

I have pretty good handle on eqing sounds for the mix of so lets talk about subtractive synthesis then.

osc -> fil -> amp

then lfo and env that can be routed into multiple places
